Marines are not spartans, they are not part of a militaristic authoritarian culture that hated democracy and kept most of their population as slaves.

The Spartans were still superior in many ways to most people, even today though.

Not at all. The Spartans reputation comes from the fact that the Spartiate class was militarized and trained and drilled to fight regularly. The attitude of the government to most greek states was adequately summed up as "Eh, Go sort it out for yourselves". The typical classical Hellenic army was composed of hoplite militia, regular farmers and potters and similar who became hoplites because they could afford swords, shields, helmets and armor. Training was typically done informally by one's father. In a fight between two phalanxes of Hoplites battles were not fought to the death and rarely would more than 10% of a phalanx would die. They're were usually fought until shortly the first couple of guys in a phalanx decided to run, which weakens the formation, which undermines the resolve of the rest of them and causes the guys next to them to run and soon the whole damn formation is running away due to a cascade effect. The spartans were better able to hold their ground in a highly specific form of heavy infantry warfare against amateurs. They were not superhumans.

You are super awesome, I served almost 8 years, I may be a disabled Marine Corps Veteran, but I wouldn't change that time for anything or anyone. I would love to use some of these pictures in my emails to friends once in awhile if it is OK with you. Would definitely list you as the artist. These will be my top favorite pics no matter what. I am so amazed and in awe of your talent. WOW, Semper Fi !!!!!!!!!
