tried to make him scary but child friendly

I always found the 3 billy goats story captivating because it connected with the deep resonance of "man" within me;

that the biggest billy goat is strong enough to fend off the attack-

it drove me to want to be strong too, so I could defend those less powerful.

It is a very inspirational story, and I always tried to imagine what the troll looked like as a kid.

me too! I always imagined it seeming much more fierce than in the books....

but that said, I now understand why the images are toned down. being a dad changes how I look at things

that was of course the main idea here too, to see if I could convey the idea while not being too graphic.

I was tempted to make it terrifying, but I have to learn to accomadate younger audiences too.

I got a new surreal piece up if you fancy coming and seeing-

getting back into drawing again slowly

love the detail you put in it it is truly your style.
I also love that you try to make it child friendly, so it can be used for illustration, yet don't "dumb" it down in just making simple lines. I remember as I kid my favorite part after, and while reading a storybook, was looking at the detailed black and white drawings that came every 5-10 page <3 great to see that no everything is disney'fied.

i couldnt do it, to prostitute my work in such a way just to sell it to the mainstream would defy the point of the thing in the first place XD
thank you so much for the kind comment, i was very pleased with how this one turned out also,
lines do not need to be simple for children, just a good idea if the pages are plastic coated and wipable XD

thank you i am trying to broaden my perspective and prove to myself and the world i could illustrate childrens books.. sometimes i surprise myself with my art, its as though i am merely a messenger of a pictoral sense. my messages for humanity are laced throughout my works...
if they are ever wise enough as a collective or as individuals to take heed though... well thats a shot for a betting man, but as i dont bet i wont even try to imagine for now the possibility.

may nothing but happiness come by your door

You could, and you should illustrate children's books. I think you have a lovely coloring style and I very much like this. I know what you mean about that. It may sound weird but I never have to work very hard for my shots. I just do and wonderful things happen.

Yeah, I am sure it is tough. But don't give up! I believe you can make it. Not that a strangers belief is worth much, but I believe it just the same!

you are wrong there, a strangers belief is worth much more as they are not sullied by knowing one's faults, weaknesses and desires, and so therefor can give unbiased, impartial faith.
i believe i will do something important sooner or later, its not how or why but simply when.

I was actually going to write a critique but apparently you can't do that unless you have a premium membership. Well then. So I'll just write it here. Obviously you are a very talented artist with great skill and you have a very unique way of portraying things so that its not like everyone elses' art. I absolutely like your work. The only thing I would suggest (and this might just be a personal basis thing) is that you try and use more vivid colors so that the characters and the art really pops out. I've looked through some of your other arts and on some pieces in some portions you put a lot of effort into certain colors and they definitely pop out, I would like to see you do pieces where its all fully drawn with more vivid colors, so that it really draws your attention.

Other then that you're quite talented !

not sure why only premium members can do it, doesnt seem very fair..
as it is, i focus vivid colour on characters rather than backgrounds so the characters stick out, i have a problem with shaky hands so often my line depth is terible, which means i need to work around it by other means... which leaves some areas less vivid than others:-S
but all advice is good advice and i shall take into account what you say my friend
as for seeing what you really want from my art, i do commissions and private original art sales for anyone worldwide, so if there is anything you would really love to see in my style let me know!
thanks so much and have a wonderful day

Yeah, I dislike that fact

Oh well like I said, its your personal thing I just was putting my two cents out there! And aww I'm sorry to hear about the shaky hands. My boyfriend has that too, so he has trouble painting the tiny details on the model cars he likes to do.. I've suggested he put his arm on a solid surface and try and work on steading himself but it seems its easier said than done!

Maybe with time you will get better with it? Unless theirs some sort of issue that I am unaware of.

Thats awesome, thanks for letting me know I will definitely keep that in mind

simonpark81 In reply to marcieness [2011-08-13 11:34:56 +0000 UTC]

its all just a ruse to get more money...

i do think you are right, they always look misty with faded backgrounds...
and its cool dont worry bout it, i totalled my arm in three places at once skateboarding a few years ago, and now my arm doesnt quite do what i want it to
i will keep working at it, im a fighter and a do-er, rather than one of those that says yeah yeah ill do it... i just do stuff and get it over with..
so im trying to fix the arm but it doesnt agree with my ethics
and there is no rush for comisions, i just love the challenge

Your perspective is right on, perfect. I love the other details in the bridge framing, and can't help but wonder what they say. You've done a fantastic job coloring as well. And this piece does come across as very child friendly.

I love everything about this. The colors are vibrant, the sky is glorious, the goats are adorable, and Shrek never looked better... (wink) Just kidding, I know it's not Shrek. It's your version of a troll.
Advise... The mountain in the back could probably stand to be less sharp... Slightly softer in tones and edges to show the distance.
I love the tree, and the arc of the bridge.
All around, fantastic job.

glad you like, i did the troll green because then kids would recognise it too...
oh and i tried to make the face disney scary, instead of pant-shi**ingly scary like my normal stuff XD
i have been messing with computerising them lately, thinking i could blend out the mountain a bit ... i love the clouds in this one too

unfortunately I live too close to the city to be able to enjoy a meteor shower. And my home is surrounded by big tall pine trees so I don't get a very good view of the sky.
I am managing to maintain.
I have good friends who help with that.
