Description Greetings, and Happy Hallowe'en.

The Lament Configuration, also known as the "Box of Sorrows", is considered to be "LeMarchand's first and arguably most classic puzzle construct. When operated properly, a pleasing melody issues from within which belies its true nature." - excerpt from Tucker's Encyclopaedia of Mass Murderers.

No one truly knows how many copies of this truly beautiful yet diabolical artefact is still in existence. What is known is that many copies must surely been lost since its first appearance in the social circles of Paris in 1749. Yours truly has come into possession of one of these marvels of human ingenuity. Who said only idle hands were the Devil's playthings?

Afterward:
This project is a little more than just my normal paper-cutting (although that's how we arrived at the six sides). It's a tad more than my usual wallpaper-making efforts (due to the subject matter) and of course, the "Lament Configuration" makes for an interested, if not somewhat auture photography subject. This piece encompasses a little bit of almost everything that I have been doing. And it's my hope that you will like it, too.

Hello! Welcome back!

... outside of the fact that I bought a pre-made wooden cube, the answer is yes: this thing is made from scratch by yours truly. And really, it's just an extension of the usual paper-cutting projects I have been doing - only that the papercuts have been mounted on a different medium. I am very glad to know you lie it, thought - this is the first time I've tried something like this. Maybe I will consider trying another one of these in the future...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Electric-Meat In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2012-11-07 20:13:46 +0000 UTC]

You really should do something like that. And then can I have it? I'll buy it Its so amazing I want one in my room

You know, I found someone selling one of these "Lament Configuration" props made of paper on Etsy. I wonder if I should consider picking this up as a business at some point in time. That way I can give people I know a big discount, too.

In the meantime... well, there's only the one - and it's sitting in my room taking up a prominent spot.

If I ever start this business, I would certainly let you know.
At this moment I think I am too busy trying to stay awake to get everything done!

... you know what I need?
... I need a good secretary/agent. I need someone who can help me take care of the business side of things so all I have to do is worry about production...

Electric-Meat In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2012-11-11 19:13:39 +0000 UTC]

Haha Im sure it cant be that hard that you need a secretary.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to Electric-Meat [2012-11-12 02:44:33 +0000 UTC]

I don't think there's any other way for me to live life!
The problem with finding a good secretary is like finding the perfect "work wife". And that's not always easy! I mean... it's hard enough to find a real wife... having the perfect "work wife" is even harder.

Hahah nawww, SP is thinking about settling down

Hein... I've got a friend who runs a tea house. He and his wife are willing to sell my paper crafts at their shop for me. But I haven't had a chance to get back to them, really. Something tells me it's because I am still reluctant to part with my own stuff...

Oh, I am not exactly thinking of settling down specifically. I am thinking of the near future where I have to set up a practice. I'll be forced to look for a work wife at that time and I am dreading the prospect already!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Electric-Meat In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2012-11-25 23:40:32 +0000 UTC]

Oh well, if you want to keep it then you should

Haha are you kidding me? You shouldn't dread it. You seem like a really great guy, and the ladies will be crazy to say no to a doctor/artist/genius.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to Electric-Meat [2012-11-26 02:59:52 +0000 UTC]

I guess I am never going to be any good as an art dealer... I am too attached to my own works! (Although, I have to say that I did lend one of my works to my local library for them to put on the walls... )

Oh, but I do dread it, actually. It's part of the growing up, I figured. I mean... I am a nice guy with a couple of screws loose here and there; decidedly not the most organised guy around. Working for me means we need to trust each other to get each other's life in order. I don't know about you, but that sounds like a pretty scary prospect! I keep on referring to myself as a "30-something-year-old man-child". Sure, I may be a doctor and probably an artist (but by no means a genius, no)... but I'm still a man-child who's dreading the prospect of growing up...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Electric-Meat In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2012-11-26 14:43:02 +0000 UTC]

Haha, well I guess it's a good thing that you are proud of your work then

Being a man child isn't a bad thing, it means you have a good sense of humor and you're not boring. You should put yourself out there and see how you do!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to Electric-Meat [2012-11-28 00:51:21 +0000 UTC]

I think I am the over-protective parent in this case...

Perhaps that's true...
... Oh, well... I am not interested in dating, not because I am afraid of it or afraid of rejections, but rather that I never had any inclination towards it. Finding a work-wife, on the other hand, is a completely different story (And a scary prospect, too!) It's something that's been circling my mind over the last little while... I guess it's because I feel like my life is spiralling out of control and I am hoping for someone to help me rein it in. Oh well... it's only me at the moment, it seems.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Electric-Meat In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2012-11-28 10:30:41 +0000 UTC]

You? Rejection? Nah, I don't see it happening. You should totally go out there, I think you should. Plus you never know unless you try Who knows maybe it take you long to find companionship

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to Electric-Meat [2012-11-29 01:42:17 +0000 UTC]

Like what I said before, I am not afraid of rejection. I am, however, uninterested in romance in general. I don't mind having friends who will share a good laugh and some quality time with me from time to time, however. But romance... let's just say I've never needed it or wanted it in my life.

... It makes me an unwitting heart-breaker, really. But totally unintentional!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Electric-Meat In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2012-12-01 16:48:56 +0000 UTC]

Oh well alright then SP besides relationship isn't all good anyway xD I hate it a lot at times also. But Im surprised you're one of those people that doesn't need company in that way, not that many people are that strong

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to Electric-Meat [2012-12-02 01:12:44 +0000 UTC]

Most people have a sexual attraction to another person, be that person of his own gender or the opposite gender. This is the kind of drive that fuels most of romantic relationships. When you don't have much sexual attraction to start with, your need romantic relationships as much as other people. It has nothing to do with being strong... it's just a slightly different world.

There are people who are selling replicas of the same item on-line. Of course, I have a feeling it's a bit of a give-and-take. Some of them have a very high production value but they can also get pretty expensive.

In the meantime... Thanks very much for your lovely comment and adding it to your list of favourites. I know I've said it many, many times before, but... I really do appreciate it.

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to GAGBAGCHEN [2012-10-26 23:20:15 +0000 UTC]

That's not just gold paper, no.
It's a foil cardstock carried by the Michael's Art Store company as part of their "Recollections Signature" series. It has raised texture on top of a card stock of about 200lbs (it's about 0.2" thick) and topped off with a thin layer of gold foil. The other effects that you are seeing in the picture is due to the final glazing effect.

I suppose esoteric would definitely be the word to use here. This project was aimed to reproduce an item seen in a series of old horror movies called "Hellraiser". The item is known as the "Lament Configuration" (hence the name of the piece.) I am very glad to hear that you like it. I may try to reproduce more of these movie props in the future!
