Description On a forgotten stretch of Old Highway 10, perched ominously on a hill behind a dreary motel, looms the intimidating edifice of the Bates House. In there you'll find mild-mannered Normal and his beloved mother. She's such a sweet old lady, you know, you might just find her peeking out from the windows from time to time...

I love horror movies. And I love paper. Not to mention I've been bitten by the papercraft bug lately. You put all of these things together, and what you're looking at is the 1/66 recreating of the Bates House from Alfred Hitchcock's iconic movie Psycho. And since this is my first attempt at building paper models, I would really appreciate it if the more experienced folks can give me their feedback on my venture. I can take a good slashing!

And if you want to see the house with an unexpected visitor who is investigating a strange case of a mummified mummy, you can check it out here: sta.sh/01m1gv4c0w6n (Get out of there, Doctor! You shouldn't be there!)

Artist's Note
1. Pattern credit: Want to build your own miniature horror house? Visit Ray Keim and his website "Haunted Dimensions" www.haunteddimensions.raykeim.… and grab the model for free. Now everybody can be a mother's boy!
2. Equipment: Cutting board, artisan cutting blade (#11), student's white glue. Varnished using Testor's Dullcoat (Matte).
3. Paper: Brochure paper at Staples, Inc's Copy and Print service. (Unfortunately, they can't tell me the weight of this paper. But it's mid-gloss and feels about 100lbs to 125 lbs (270gsm to 338gsm.)
4. Size: Height: 7", width: 6.5", depth: 8.5" (approx 1:66 scale)
5. Time: No idea. I think I spent more time waiting for the glue to dry than anything else!
6. Thanks for your encouragement and your inspiration!

Hello!

Thanks very much for your very kind words!
I love horror movies, and if I could convey a little bit of my love of classic horror movies to you, then I consider my task complete. (And it certainly seems like I did it this time!

You are absolutely right. There is the good old Mrs. Bates peeking out from one of the windows. The person who created the pattern for the papercraft deliberately put her in as a subtle nod to the movie. And I like these small, subtle things when it comes to horror. Jump-scares are becoming quite annoying, really. The "Fog" effect was a happy coincidence. I have had a lot of problem with how to film this piece of work after it was completed. But the slight foggy focus on my phone actually helped with the final presentation. So I took it and ran with it! And I am so very glad that you liked how it turned out. That's a real morale boost!

Thank you!

You are very welcome !

You definitely accomplished your task here xD.

That's really awesome! Agreed, though I am personally very skittish when it comes to horror movies and would prefer not to see jump scares xD. It's really cool that you used the focus to enhance the presentation of your piece; you could make more horror-related crafts to make further use of the effect

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to craftsbyblue [2016-07-27 00:25:53 +0000 UTC]

I don't like jump scares much, either. I think they are over-used and it's a cheap way to get people to react to an otherwise mediocre movie. So I have to agree with you here - count me out!

But that being said, I still love horror movies in general. So thank you for your suggestions. When I have the time, I'll see what other kinds of horrible things I can conjure up with my "slightly-off-focus" camera! I think it'll be a lot of fun, too!

craftsbyblue In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2016-07-31 23:19:38 +0000 UTC]

I think it's more effective if used sparingly, and the story is good to begin with. Otherwise it is indeed a cheap thrill.

You are welcome; I look forward to seeing what you create !

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to craftsbyblue [2016-08-01 02:02:18 +0000 UTC]

Exactly!
Which is why I am getting really tired of people using jump-scares willy-nilly. It's a totally horrible waste of a potentially good resource!

I hope to keep you entertained in the future!

Agreed; the same goes for other overused movie techniques, if one doesn't know how to use it properly, then it gradually loses its effectiveness .

You will !

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to craftsbyblue [2016-08-07 02:35:20 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely. There are a number of rather old, tedious movie techniques out there (a lot of people have had some harsh words to say about the found-footage genre lately, for example...) Sometimes imitation really isn't the most sincere form of flattery...

Thank you! I will definitely try my best!

Wow. That's really amazing.
When you said you were building a paper model of a house, I had no idea it would be this intricate or beautiful.
Spectacular work, my friend. You should be very proud!

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to WilliamJCovello [2015-12-08 08:09:47 +0000 UTC]

Well... it's a paper model where all the outer "veneer" is already done. So I can't really claim all that much credit for doing this. But yes... as advertised: a paper model of a house! A house where the Doctor visits, too! (Really... I love the photos with the Doctor in there... I know they were added as an addendum and not everyone would have seen them. But hey... You gotta admit, it's cool nonetheless, right?)

I'm happy at how this one turned out, but I know it can be better (and I can be better.) It's a work in progress, that's for sure. After all, I'm just new to the hobby. It's onward and forward to making new things happen with paper! In the meantime... thank you so very much for your very kind words and your support. I can't thank you enough!

And it is a beauty. You certainly took great part in making it the triumph that is is, and you deserve credit for that.

And for a work in progress, it still looks pretty darn good.

And all this time spent cutting paper's gotta get me some brownie points when cutting paper for another reason.

Thank you so very much for your very kind words!

Thank you very much!
The original 1960, black and white, Alfred Hitchcock movie was a lot better than the 1998 remake. And it's highly recommended. Sometimes the old ones are still the best.

Let me answer the other conversations later. For some reason, it seems like I have a million things to do all at the same time! It feels like I am always running out of time. Please forgive me!

Very interesting that you created this miniature house out of paper (it looks very simple in shape, but the painting and little details on the walls/sides of this house makes it look believable); Great job

Hello!

Thanks for your too-kind comments! Truth of the matter is this kind of paper models usually have the coloured parts already printed on the paper. So I can't claim credit for painting all the details. The only thing I can lay claim on is assembly and photography. It's a new hobby that I am trying out on top of the usual papercutting that I do. I am glad that you approve of what I've managed to put together here. And hopefully I'll be able to continue to impress you in the future!

With sincere thanks,

Oh, absolutely!
The website I liked in the artist's comments actually has a large series of models that you can just print and build. They come in all different skill levels. Start with something that captures your attention (and something that's not too hard). It's a really rewarding adventure!

You really like complicated things
I liked the roof guardrails and the creepy thing peeking out the window. And it's fantastic as you managed to handle such thick paper in a relatively small model (more than 200g is difficult to handle ).
And for best results try to paint the edges of the paper with a similar color printing  (one of the drawback of working with thick paper )
But overall your diorama is amazing .

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to BRSpidey [2015-11-26 05:07:00 +0000 UTC]

... I guess so?
(then again, I didn't consider this one too complicated. I thought it was within a good range for "first time project"...)

Thanks for your very helpful feedback! I agree with you. This piece would look a lot better if the seams are painted over. It's probably because I was using such thick paper, but I think the thickness of the paper helped the piece to stay together. I would have been afraid to use anything thinner. And I didn't realise this was a relatively small model, either! I thought it was manageable.

But thanks a million for your support and your guidance. Having your approval means the world to me!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BRSpidey In reply to SinistrosePhosphate [2015-11-27 04:19:46 +0000 UTC]

Well it's certainly a great start!
Yes, the models can be classified by their height and complexity, smaller models can be up to 20 cm, medium to 40-50cm, larger models up to 1 meter. Although there are also micro models less than 5cm and life-size models . This is where we must take into account the weight of the paper. The larger model, the thicker paper. Even a medium model can be sustained with plain paper printer . But always the recommendation: use paper with which you feel comfortable .
But you don't need my approval , and the most important thing is that you like the result .

Keep papercrafting!

SinistrosePhosphate In reply to BRSpidey [2015-11-27 06:21:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a million!
I have another project in mind for my next one, too.

Thanks for your explanation; now I understand. The reason why I chose this model was because I like the movie - and it was small enough to fit on my working table. At the end of it, I think it turned out OK. I think I'll like the smaller models better, myself. It just seem to work out better for me at the end.

I know I don't need your approval... but it's still nice to have it!
After all, it's like we are trading our hobbies with each other. Now that you have tried papercutting, I wanted to show you that I can do papercraft. I love the results (and I love the little things I can do with my small plastic model, too. The house is just the right size for the Doctor!

Thanks! I'll let you know when the second one is on its way!
