7/26/23 EDIT: New color scheme and updated flavor!

As with the previous stage of this line, I figured a small change in the color scheme would work wonders for the added theme I had in mind for Korrodra and his updated Gigantamax form. I think the yellow bits in this new palette emphasize the sulphur association, both in terms of the acid pools this big lug calls home and his mythical inspiration. In medieval European alchemy, the basilisk represented both the transmutation of metals, not unlike acids reacting to metals in real chemistry, and the union of mercury, representing the spirit, and sulphur, denoting the soul. Add to that the fact that some types of venom in nature include sulfate compounds, the basilisk seeming to make any place it visits unlivable, and just how dangerous sulfuric hot springs usually are to multicellular life, and bam, there's your giant, horrible, drooling, acid-guzzling murder-lizard for you! I plan to have the revised GMax form make the sulphur spring connection clearer, but for now I hope you guys don't mind this slight recolor! It isn't that big a change, but it certainly makes a lot more thematic sense - at least to me, anyway!

4/8/23 EDIT: New design!

Korrodra has always been one of my personal favorite fakemon designs for Sundo, but the artwork for even the version 2 design has aged a bit less gracefully than most, and while I adore the overall look of that version and decided to keep it, a few specific aspects still had to be upgraded this time around. The biggest two changes I made were the shape of the body markings and the color scheme, both of which are connected. It really did seem like I had an obsession with straight lines and rings on my fakemon artwork back in the day, and with Korrodra all they did was make the design look less natural, especially with the bright, clashing palette from when I included Gila monster elements in the concept. Aside from fixing up all the shapes and curves of the lineart to prevent it from looking scratchy and amateurish, I made the markings more blotchy and organic with a thinner outline compared to the other parts of the body, and also changed the color palette to a more subtle set of purples and dull orange belly with the green bits being used for accents. I then made a few adjustments for the shiny which then served as the basis for the normal color palette of Varanox, because I like two-stage evolutionary lines where the color scheme of the first form is the same as the shiny of the evolution and vice versa. The look of the acid also got upgraded with less arbitrary shapes and dribble positioning, better effects and lighting, and most importantly, being on a separate layer group so you can see a version of the artwork without it. The final flourish I threw in was a slight lengthening of the two outer rear horns to both reduce negative space and make the draconic look more apparent - based on the current results from my recent survey, it looks like Korrodra will be staying Poison/Dragon! I decided to have the level at which Varanox evolves be a lot higher than before to ensure that this line, while being relatively early in the dex tally, doesn't lose its value given the type combo, but also added 40 points to the BST (at the behest of BrionneIsBae ) to make the BST high enough to justify the level change. Just 15 points were added to the physical Attack - he's got plenty as it is - but the remaining 25 went straight to physical Defense, and I also moved 10 points from Speed to Sp. Def. while I was at it. This thing is intended an offensive tank more than anything else, so in hindsight a slower but somewhat sturdier build made a little more sense.

I'm still debating as to whether to revise/redesign the Gigantamax or remove it entirely since the survey is skewing towards nixing the GMaxes, but I'd love to get your opinion on the subject. Regardless, I hope you enjoy this new look for an old favorite, and stay tuned for more Sundo revisions and updates in the near future!

10/02/18 EDIT: Updated design!

Like with his pre-evolved form, Korrodra's previous appearance didn't look that good to me whilst looking back at it after a few years, so I finally decided to get off my lazy bum today and remake him good as new! I'd have liked to use the Crystal Palace "dinosaurs" as inspiration but with this particular design it just didn't gel with the rest of it, so I had to bid it adieu, alas, and instead went with a more hunkered down, battle-ready posture. The same marking simplification as with Varanox was also applied, and the spikes were simplified quite a bit as well. In particular, the horns were changed up to look like a crown, as a reference to the mythical basilisk being the "king of serpents" and how it's sometimes portrayed with a cockscomb or crown. (There's a bit of a perspective fail, in that the rear horn behind the head should be positioned a little further away from the one up front, but heck with it, let's just say there's actually three of them and the one with the wonky perspective is in the middle and the other one is obscured by the two front horns, like so .) The spiky "beard" was also expanded so that its motif runs down the throat as well, and no gross green teeth now! Instead the upper lip is green and has tooth-spikes like on Tyrantrum's maw to get the point across. Add a big wide green tongue to finish it off, and bam, done and done. This design is fast becoming one of my new favorites, and really, what's not to love about a big murderous dragon-lizard that drools horrible corrosive acid?

Also got rid of a few moves that weren't needed, and added a new TM for flavor's sake. You know how the gaze of the basilisk turns people to stone in some myths? Well, that's exactly how a Korrodra using Rock Tomb would happen! And also Surf exists, to reference the fact that Komodo dragons can swim! Say your prayers, Ground-types... >;3

Dragon-types? In my early game?! It's more likely than you think!

Korrodra's earliest incarnation was sometime during 2010, when I was just starting out on dA, and like Varenom, the original pic of him, when he had the less creative name of "Toximodo", never saw the light of day. His inspiration should be pretty obvious, and while the type combination is far from original in the fakemon community, it makes so much sense that I don't care. So here he be!

Komodo dragons are the world's largest living lizard, native to Indonesia's Komodo Island, and these carnivorous reptiles can subdue live as large as water buffalo, though they usually stick to smaller fare like goats and deer. They may not breathe fire, sure, but they're as close to an actual dragon as you can get, so the added Dragon type was pretty much a given. Komodo dragons are a uniform shade of gray-brown, so I gave Korrodra a more Pokémon-esque color pattern inspired by the related perentie lizard as well as beaded lizards, which are related to the monitor family. There's also influence from really old depictions of dinosaurs like the Crystal Palace sculptures from 1854, specifically Megalosaurus - which was named the "Big Lizard" because its discoverer noted that its fossilized teeth were so similar to monitor lizards - as well as the mythical basilisk, said to leave trails of deadly venom in its wake and even kill with a glance, hence the Corrosion ability and the starting move Leer for the previous form! (In a similar vein, I imagine he'd also be able to learn Glare via breeding from Arbok or Druddigon.) The spikes and horns are also a nod to "slurpasaurs", the practice of gluing fake add-ons to lizards and billing them as dinosaurs or other prehistoric monsters, and interestingly enough, there really was a giant prehistoric lizard monster not far from where the Komodo dragon lives: the Megalania of Ice-Age Australia. Which, incidentally, is at about the same size range as Korrodra is!

Like his pre-evolution, Korrodra gets nasty acidic drool all over the place. Gross. This is because Komodo dragons really do have a dangerous bite: we used to think that they have bacteria in their mouths which kill prey via infection, but more recent studies have suggested that these lizards, and other monitors, have actual venom instead. It's possible that this venom is used to prevent blood clotting, and combining this with the wound created by the bite itself, victims die of blood loss and shock. Whatever the case, I would not want to come into contact with this dragon's deadly slobber!

You'd think Korrodra's stat spread would based off Arbok, but I actually took more influence from one of the weaker Dragon-types, Druddigon. The 90 HP is 13 points above Druddigon's 77, though the 95 Attack is 25 points below Druddigon's 120. The special stats were switched around for a mixed attacker spread, and physical defense paid dearly by being almost halved, but recouped its losses with an additional 20 points for a decent 75. The 80 Speed is based on Arbok, however, because Druddigon is just too slow. The stat total, 480, is five points behind Druddigon's 485, and 42 points ahead of Arbok's 438!

As noted, Korrodra is a mixed attacker, able to dish out both physical and special attacks competently. Dragon-type attacks like Dragon Claw, Dragon Breath, and Outrage are awesome as always, but they're useless against Fairies, which is where the Poison-type comes in. Regurgitate, also learned by his pre-evolved form, Varenom, goes well with a Poison Gem, Berry, or even a one-time-use defense booster like a Luminous Moss or a Snowball. More importantly, however, Korrodra also learns the deadly Acid Bath, which hits Steel-types for massive damage! Finally, a means for Poison-types to actually hurt Steel-types! Alternatively, HA Corrosion can be used to poison other Poison-types and Steel-types hoping to take advantage of free switch ins, though direct damage immunity is still a problem. Aside from that, a number of Korrodra's other moves can be boosted with Sheer Force, allowing you to abuse Fire Fang and Dragon Rush for great coverage if you prefer, well, not poisoning stuff. Korrodra also gets a bit of support skills in the form of Dragon Tail, which can force switches and potentially turn the battle around in a team fight.

I love Korrodra's new design, from his lethal simplicity to his pretty color scheme to the revolting slime dribbling from his maw, which was fun to color and shade. Steel-types had better watch out, because Korrodra is hungry, AND HE WANTS TO EAT YOUR FLESH!!!

Shouldn't it have Corrosion as its ability?

Corrosion only applies to status moves that poison the target. Attacking Poison moves will still not affect Steel-types even with Corrosion.

i like the how the green scaly lips at the top gained tooth-like protrusions, it's like what could happen if a Komodo Dragon or Iguana became more primeval and monstrous in appearance.

So does Regurgitate work for non-edible items, i.e. things other than berries? Does Korrodra eat all items to use them?! I guess it works if that is the case. Otherwise Belch works, and either way, I feel Belch could fit into his moveset!

Yep, and yes, they go down the hatch as well. Korrodra's stomach acids are THAT powerful! And I can see Belch being an egg move from Arbok or something, yes. Probably not quite as versatile, though, since it requires Berries specifically, but still!
