Mostly I just paint them, but this guy also involved some customisation of the original miniature! I have some WiP pics showing it here - anything in grey is the original model, and anything white is what I made/added myself.

Thank you! The rift is just five thin layers of plasticard cut out and glued together, then once the glue was dry I trimmed down the outer edges to shape it. Then I painted it, then I put a few layers of Vallejo Water Texture Acrylic over it to build up the clear energy effect!
