Description Rashidi, the first of my Pre-Heresy scheme Thousand Sons. The model is the Forgeworld special Boarding Marine, only sold at Games Day Australia 2011.

Had a lot of fun painting this guy. First time attempting zenithal lighting, using wet-blending.

Base was made from spare greenstuff and Realistic Water from Secret Weapon Scenics.

Sorry, I don't actually have anywhere special I get my parts from! This particular miniature was a Games Day exclusive model, so as far as I know if you weren't at Games Day you can't get it anywhere else.

However, check out Forgeworld ! They've got a ton of stuff you can get to make customised models from.

Alright then. Now another thing i want to know is If based on the Thunderwarrior figure in the armor through the ages kit is what kind of pieces would you recommend to use for converting a normal marine to a thunder warrior. As far as i know i figured i could possibly use IG helmets. scout heads and arms, chaos backpacks and boots  but i have no idea of which Forge world chest peice would look better, Deathguard MKIII or regular MK III iron armor chest peice

Hmm, I don't know much about the Thunder Warriors apart from the pic on the Games Workshop site. I don't know if I'd use IG heads/helmets - they might be a little small. Worth a try though! You could also try using the various bare-heads from regular marine kits, and if you're feeling really adventurous, try sculpting helmets on them with greenstuff or something.

I also probably wouldn't use chaos backpacks, at least not without modifying them first - the exhausts tend to be noticeably further out away from the backpacks than what I'm seeing on the Thunder Warrior pic. It's possible to modify chaos backpacks though to put the round exhaust things closer to the backpack itself, it just involves some very careful cutting and sanding and some glue. XD I've done it myself but I don't have any pics yet 'cause I haven't touched my WH40k stuff for like a year. :\ Or you could just use regular marine backpacks.

As for chestplates, I really don't know. You could try both, perhaps - maybe the Thunder Warriors had a mixture of different armour designs as the Emperor was developing them, who knows. Go with whatever you think looks coolest!

Thanks For the Advice on the Subject. I think both would be good the way i look at it because from other pictures i just found shows that most thunder warriors wore blank armor just colored to match the legion they were belonging too.

Thanks! I bought the whole model while I was at Games Day 2011, Australia. He's the exclusive Forgeworld model that you could only get at the various Games Day events last year.

Nothing bad to say from the pics. Looks really good. Would have to see it in person to get the full feel and intricacies of it but other than that it looks awesome.

Eventually! Might be a while though, currently working on customising a squad of chaos terminators, it'll probably be some time before they're done. Got a couple of other projects that might get done before them, too.

It was prolly a Games Day in general special then. XD Bah, now I feel kinda cheated, hehe. Ah well, still an awesome model. And thanks! Hopefully my current project will turn out as good.

GlauG In reply to skycat [2011-12-07 13:35:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, it is the "Forge World Event Model" for 2011. It's just that there were 30-odd other events worldwide where you could get one too, I got a friend of mine to snag one for me here in the UK. Personally the shield screams Pre-Heresy Emperors Children to me... What's your current project?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skycat In reply to GlauG [2011-12-07 14:39:27 +0000 UTC]

True, true, hehe. Glad you managed to get one for yourself! And yeah, it occurred to me earlier that it looks like MkIII armour, but if it is, then it shouldn't have the aquilla on the breastplate unless it's an Emperor's Children marine. Bleh.

My current project is a handful of Terminator conversions ! I'm modifying a box of Chaos Terminators to look more like Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons terminators. These ones will still be blue and gold, but I'm also considering doing a five-man squad of grey knight terminators converted similarly and painting those ones red. Still not sure yet - I'm also considering just doin up the GKs as regular ones and seein' if I can sell 'em. Income would be nice. XD But I'm not gonna decide either way on that 'til I've finished the current Terminators... and the ten Mk4 tactical marines and five Mk5 assault marines I got from Forgeworld...

Looking sharp! I'm not too fond of the squared shoulders, but scratchbuilding round pre-H Terminator shoulders sucks ass so I can see why. It's almost enough to make me want to get back to doing some of my own.

skycat In reply to GlauG [2011-12-07 20:38:43 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Hehe, the main reason I'm doin 'em square is 'cause I'm using this pic as reference. Never even considered the difficulty of makin' round shoulderpads. If I were, I'd probably just make 'em entirely of greenstuff.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GlauG In reply to skycat [2011-12-07 21:03:49 +0000 UTC]

Haha, oddly enough I think that's just an artistic oversight there on that pic; I've got the "HH: Collected Visions" book and they're always round from the side. But yeah, they're more annoying to make, especially consistently... I never managed to find a decent plastic cylinder as a base. There was a tutorial on Dakkadakka for using Tamiya plastic barrels, but it didn't work so well for me.

skycat In reply to GlauG [2011-12-08 10:02:30 +0000 UTC]

Heh, entirely possible! I've gone through the Collected Visions book as well - some awesome Sons stuff in there, definitely. Though the only other pic of Sons Terminators I can recall atm is this one , which had the curved shoulderpads, yeah. But I prefer the square ones, honestly.

And hey, the different shoulderpads could be for different ranks or cults of Terminators. Who knows. XD

Thinking about it, the way I'd probably make rounded shoulder pads is to find a tube or something that's about the right diameter, then coat it in vaseline or something and flatten out greenstuff or milliput onto it. Cut it into shape either before or after the greenstuff's dry, then slide it off the tube. The general shape might not be highly consistent, depending on your accuracy cutting the overall shape, but at least the curve would be! Heck, if the tube's long enough you could probably do several at once.

Hmm, now I'm half-tempted to try this.

GlauG In reply to skycat [2011-12-08 12:30:30 +0000 UTC]

True, in the case of the SoH in particular, it could be that one cult believes that squared angles better reflect the inner Zen needed to smite people with mind bullets.

And yeah, the problem is finding something about the right size. I looked at an awful lot of pens, but to no avail!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skycat In reply to GlauG [2011-12-08 13:17:48 +0000 UTC]

SoH? All I can think of is Sons of Horus, and that's just confusing me. x_x But yeah, that's entirely possible. XD Given that each cult was formed based on what pattern they saw in the stones and all that. Anything to get better mind bullets.

Hehehe I was just eyeballing a coupla my pens. I'll hafta take a better look sometime.

Urgh, sorry, I meant Thousand Sons, I'd just woken up from my first sleep in 48 hours when I posted that

I suspect if you were consistent you could sculpt a nice enough pair on top of a pen and then use that as part of a mould for push-casting more of them, which is something I might try myself... Despite my near-total loss of interest in all things GW after the way the company treated me as an employee, I do keep having fun ideas for projects I could finish and then sell.

skycat In reply to GlauG [2011-12-08 20:35:08 +0000 UTC]

Ahh, hehe, np. Dude, sleep more! XD

Yeah, I was thinking of push-casting shoulders - I've got some of that Instant Mould stuff that you can reuse for casting, it's great stuff. If I do decide to go with rounded shoulders instead I might try that, dunno yet.

GlauG In reply to skycat [2011-12-08 21:22:50 +0000 UTC]

I don't have time for sleep, I'm too busy >_>

And I've not used instant mould, what's it like? It was on my to-buy list before I realised I wouldn't have time or space for minis when I went back to university... I tend to use two-part silicone putties.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skycat In reply to GlauG [2011-12-09 08:00:04 +0000 UTC]

It's pretty nifty! It's basically this clear putty kinda stuff - you soften it by dropping it in hot water for a coupla minutes, then press whatever you're moulding into it and let it cool. Then you just use it as a press mould. You can use it as a two-part mould as well, but it's a little more fiddly, I need to practice doing that some more before I get anything decent, I think. Basically do one half, put it in the fridge to cool that half quickly, then press the other half on top, and they won't meld together.

Greenstuff and other moulding stuff doesn't stick to it, so it's pretty easy to get whatever you're moulding out once it hardens. Just don't use any sort of resin that needs heat or creates heat as it cures, 'cause it'll warp the mould.

Best part is, the stuff's reuseable. Just drop it in hot water again!

Sounds a bit like it's a similar plastic to low-melt hot glue gun glue...

Well it's not toooo sticky until it gets too hot. Warm water isn't enough, from memory...
