Description After about five months of working on them (alongside other projects), these boys are finally finished! Arms are magnetised, and pauldrons were all scratch-built from plasticard and greenstuff. Helmets were modified using more plasticard and greenstuff, and the glaive weapons were also made using... plasticard, greenstuff and some spare bits. The bases were also custom-made using greenstuff.

And yes, I am fully aware that they're using the pre-Heresy Thousand Sons symbol. That's entirely deliberate.

As for the symbols for each terminator, they're based on which psychic discipline each one specialises in. Had to make up a couple of the symbols since there's no real descriptions of them as yet in the 40k background fluff.

Decided to make the Raptora symbol a swooping hawk - fits the overall bird theme they seem to have going, and raptor = bird of prey. Flared wings to give the impression of a 'shield' to represent the Raptora's kine shields, and outstretched talons to represent their more offensive telekinetic abilities.

I vaguely remember reading somewhere that the Athanaean symbol was the aspect of an owl, which seems to fit. Again, fits the overall bird theme, and owls are considered wise, all-seeing and all-knowing.

The Pyrae and Pavoni symbols have been described in fluff, so those were easy enough - a phoenix and a colourful feather, respectively. And of course the Corvidae use the raven's head, but none of this squad are Corvidae, so eh.

Thanks! And if you check out photos of lava flows, like this one or this one , you'll notice that the black rocks are pretty similar to how I've done them - a very flat, matte black with not much detail. I also like to leave the bases like that so that they don't distract too much from the model itself, especially since the lava itself provides plenty of detail.

Hehe, thank you! Though alas, as much as I'd like to, I can't take credit for Kamuzu's vox grille; that was already part of the head I modified for him, if I remember right.

If I remember right, it's one of the helmetless heads with just a breather mask from the Chaos Land Raider or Chaos Rhino boxes. Here's a coupla WIP shots of it!

I like it, especially the square pauldrons. One thing confuses me though. Their painted post-heresy colors, but use pre-heresy symbols.

The post-heresy colours but pre-heresy symbol is entirely deliberate. It's part of my backstory for them, heh.

I'm currently in the middle of writing a story involving my Sons army and my friend's Grey Knights army (among others), heh. Not finished yet, but it does clarify what's going on with these guys.

I also plan on actually writing the backstory for my army as well... one day... Accursed writers' block, blargh.

Dinadan-Ermorfea [2012-04-18 21:58:44 +0000 UTC]

Nice work, although I think the pauldrons could have done with being closer to the torso - in some of the pics (most notably front and back of Kamuzu) it looks as if there is a 'gap' between the arms and the bodies which looks unnatural. But apart from that, good work - nice painting, and nice sculpting

skycat In reply to Dinadan-Ermorfea [2012-04-18 23:35:03 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

And yeah, Kamuzu especially I kinda messed up on the pauldrons there. 'Cause he's using the loyalist lightning claw arms, they don't fit onto the torso quite the same way as the chaos terminator arms do. So they ended up a little further out 'cause of the magnets, and I didn't move the shoulder pads in closer to the torso to compensate. But I didn't realise till too late. >_< It does bug me, and I might fix it up one day, but for now I'm just glad to have the damn squad done. Five months, aaagh.

lol. Know that feeling, been working on some truescale pre-Heresy Thousand Sons for ages - actual scultping was finished months ago, but have been really lazy with the painting so there's still stuff to do with them, lol.

GlauG [2012-04-15 17:45:24 +0000 UTC]

Absolutely sick to death of 40k, but as ever, loving your miniatures. I am conflicted. Only crit is that I don't feel that the loyalist Lightning Claws and the head on the bottom one look quite right, somehow. Claws seem too plain compared to the rest of the mini, with all the piped detailing.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skycat In reply to GlauG [2012-04-16 00:00:05 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! And muahaha taste the conflict! TASTE IT.

I'm still trying to figure out why the Chaos Terminator box doesn't come with ANY lightning claws, even though they're a weapons option in the codex. ;_; So weird. Maybe I should've whacked a scarab on them to give 'em a bit more detail - didn't think of that before. :\ And I was pondering on whether or not to do the lightning effects on the claws, but decided not to 'cause I liked how the claws themselves looked as they were. Laziness had nothing to do with it, I swear. ¬_¬

As for the head - Kamuzu's an apothecary (ignoring the fact that Chaos marines don't get apothecaries as such ¬_¬), so I wanted to give him the apothecary-style eye lenses. The rest of his head is based on this image of Hathor Maat, the Pavoni Magister Templi, since Kamuzu is also Pavoni. Doesn't look much like the others, but eh. XD Trying to put a nasal crest on with the apothecary lenses there as well wouldn't have really worked, I think.

Urgh, I've been trying to sell off all my GW stuff, and can't bring myself to do it faster than in dribs and drabs. Love the hobby, HATE the company. Very painful, and then I see cool stuff done by friends (mostly online these days) and it gets me interested again. Though I guess I already own enough stuff to never need to buy another kit and keep modelling for the rest of my life. >_>

The short version is so that people will spend money on other kits for bits... Like the Chaos Lord, for example. And personally I think the lack of the piped rim is what makes them stand out... if you did it again, maybe a little bit of GS would help.

As for the head, while the Apothecary explanation works, I think it was the combo of additional optics on a close-combat Terminator that set my spidey-sense tingling.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skycat In reply to GlauG [2012-04-16 01:04:54 +0000 UTC]

Keep all your stuff! Then send bits to me.

It's just weird. They have fifty million OTHER arms.. but no lightning claws. Sigh. Oh well, thankfully I have friends with bits. XD And I see what you mean 'bout the piping - I'll hafta keep it in mind if I ever do something like these boys again, heh. Though that won't happen for a long long time, got too many other projects in mind!

Hahaha, the additional optics are so he can better see where to CARVE YOU OPEN. Kamuzu's kinda like a 40K version of Retread - grumpy-ass medic bastard. XD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GlauG In reply to skycat [2012-04-16 02:33:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, one of the only reasons anyone works for GW vs any other min-wage retail is because one amasses quite a collection of bits... I have probably over $1,000 of Terminators (Chaors, Loyallist, Space Furry) all in pieces in a big plastic tub... Including several sets of the Chaos Lord claws I hoarded because of their scarcity. >_> Actually, that reminds me; Space Wolf Termies have a set of lightning claws with piping on. I used them for my evil Pirate Wolves I just sold off.

That makes more sense with the backstory provided. But it isn't one of those ones that tells itself, I guess? I don't know. Being a grognard now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skycat In reply to GlauG [2012-04-16 04:02:12 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, butchering Space Wolves is appealing... XD

Yeh, I can see what you mean. I just figured that the lenses were apothecary-enough to get that idea across - I honestly thought those lenses were pretty much an apothecary-only thing. And I also specifically gave him the legs with the pouch hanging off the belt chain (and added a second pouch using greenstuff, come to think of it) to represent medical shit he'd possibly be carrying. That's prolly a bit too subtle though, heh.

Hehe, speaking of grognard, if we wanted to get even more nitpicky, could also point out that they're using post-Heresy colours... but the PRE-Heresy Thousand Sons symbol. But again, that's covered in my backstory for them, so eh.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GlauG In reply to skycat [2012-04-16 09:19:15 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, you'd just have to fill in the runes, but I figure that might appeal.

And nowadays Thousand Sons Terminators (like all the Legion Termies) are a frustrating grey area anyway, since rules-wise you can only have Termies with the Mark of Tzeentch, rather than TS Termies specifically. So there's plenty of wiggle room for one's own personal canon

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

skycat In reply to GlauG [2012-04-16 10:46:16 +0000 UTC]

Me? Maim Space Wolves? Never!

I'm looking forward to the new Chaos 'dex, whenever that decides to come out. In the meantime though, I wiggle plenty. Seeing as these boys - and the rest of my blue Sons army! - are all from Pre-Heresy times, and are still loyalists... *whistles innocently*

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

GlauG In reply to skycat [2012-04-16 10:50:17 +0000 UTC]

New Chaos 'Dex? I guess maybe after 6E later this year or whatever.

And a Pre-Heresy Thousand Sons army using the Grey Knight book is one of those things I really want to do sometime, but... I can't say it's likely to happen, alas. :/ I can totally see myself getting into Pre-Heresy modelling/gaming in a big way if I get back into the hobby though.

And why are they blue?
