Thank you These wings are always so difficult for me and so I avoid making fairies much!

You can not tell that they are difficult to make! You always make gorgeous wings!

Sleetwealth In reply to S0WIL0 [2010-02-28 20:37:00 +0000 UTC]

It took me a long time to find a way I liked to make the wire and film wings. I used to sculpt them ,but it was too heavy and fragile. So many fairy makers have gorgeous wings, but whenever I made them of fantasy film they looked plastic.
I airbrushed these and that cuts the plastic look and is more fitting for the soft nautral look of my work.

I like all of your wings actually. The hand sculpted ones are awesome!

This has a fantasy and adventure feel that i used to find on certain books when i was little. I like the concept, I think you managed quite well to represent it with this sculpture. I love her determined expression.

I just noticed the eye that catches the light...Are the eyes made of glass or do you use some kind of varnish if you don't mind me asking?

wonderfully emotive piece...really looks like she belongs in Rossetti's poem[goblin market,I presume?]....and the wings are just masterly......wonderful piece of faery art

Thank you for commenting. Actauly I havent read Rossetti's poem. I guess I should do that now!

AngelusNoir In reply to Sleetwealth [2008-07-28 01:12:59 +0000 UTC]

oh,you should...it's a wonderfully complex poem...and although the allegorical overtones may seem a bit heavy-handed today, the descriptive passages and pervasive air of fantasy is wonderful...I have a few sketches myself which I may submit one day...I read it as a child, and was amused to learn that Christina's brother[the great pre-Raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti] kept a wombat[which is how she describes one of the goblins],in his private menagerie..[and being from Oz,I found that a droll detail....]

Sleetwealth In reply to AngelusNoir [2008-07-28 08:04:37 +0000 UTC]

I looked it up and managed to read peices of it. It sounds good and Ill read it again in more detail for some inspiration maybe! Im surprised I didnt find this because how much I love the raphaelites work and the arts craft movement.

Im fond of goblins anyway!

Your creations look like Waterhouse paintings stepped out of their canvas and you were the lucky person to take pictures of their escape. Magnificent!

Sleetwealth In reply to Bloodtruffle [2008-07-21 06:37:06 +0000 UTC]

Thank you. I adore all PreRaphealite artists and am trying for a little of that style. With practice I think I can nail it exactly.

Hmm. Her right arm (the one on the left of the picture, the one folded up in front of her) appears to be a bit too long. The elbow is lower than her left arm's elbow. Can't fix it now though, yah? This has been fired. Anyways, everything else looks great. Her wings and hair are beautiful and I love the expression in her face, like some wild creature that is uncertain yet if it should run away. Quite lovely. You make beautiful work.

Sleetwealth In reply to TheBrassGlass [2008-07-21 04:54:00 +0000 UTC]

Hmm.. Im not sure now since I dont have the figure anymore to check ,but here are two possible factors.
The left shoulder is dropped lower than the right side and the left arm is folded in front of her and the right one is down by her side. In the camera that would make the foreground arm appear larger.

Thank you for your kind comments and crit. I appeciate you taking the time

It doesn't show you had problems, they're beautiful! I'm thinking of making my own eyes as well but find it a bit fiddly. At the mo I just sculpt them. Do you mind if I ask how you do it?

I hadn't... What a dark, moody piece! She seems to just ooze into the quagmire. It definitely has the same kind of emotion content as your dolls, but with your dolls you get those amazing details. Thanks for posting.

Actauly I was a bit obsessed with detail I was better at that than form, value or composion. That is an incomplete peice so is very basic. I didnt have the skill that I have in clay. but that style is still visible in both.

This is an absolutely amazing sculpture! I am particularly curious about how you have made the wings... Care to let me in on your secret?
Absolutely perfectly made! I adore your attention to detail in the faces, hands and feet in all of your sculptures... Especially since they are fairly small in size =]

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sleetwealth In reply to Middy-Wolf [2008-07-03 18:40:48 +0000 UTC]

The wings are wire glued to cellophane. Then they are airbrushed and sealed. They are flexible and posable.
Thank you . I am fanatic about detail!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Middy-Wolf In reply to Sleetwealth [2008-07-05 01:11:11 +0000 UTC]

Whoah! Wire glued to cellophane?! Holy crap am I able to experiment with that? I think I have some fine beading wire and celephane that I could use.
I recently stumbled upon a book of a lady's art where she made faeries clothing out of things found in the natural environment. So she used pressed flowers and leaves and such to make these little clothes. I was thinking of making some and to also incorporate wings like you've done would just really top it off =]
Thansk for taking the time to answer my comment =]

Sleetwealth In reply to Middy-Wolf [2008-07-05 03:14:30 +0000 UTC]

Yes, cheap stuff and you can find anywhere. There are tutorials online too if you seach for fairy wings.

Is that the Fairyality book? Those are cool little clothes. Too bad on a real figure would probably become brittle and decompose, but it would be great for collage work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Middy-Wolf In reply to Sleetwealth [2008-07-05 06:10:18 +0000 UTC]

Yes! I'm glad you've heard of the book! I've been looking for Fairy-type books in local bookstores (also graphics design) but they don't seem to have much. I wrote down the name of the book when I found it though! Collage and mixed media are always a delight to do!

Thanks for you helpful advice!

Sleetwealth In reply to Middy-Wolf [2008-07-05 20:15:27 +0000 UTC]

You should look at amazon. If you search a book it tells you others that are similar Then you can check ebay with titles you are interested in and get them cheaper sometimes.

Your welcome

Middy-Wolf In reply to Sleetwealth [2008-08-24 04:50:00 +0000 UTC]

oooh! just another quick question about these wings... what gauge wire did you use?
I've got 20 gauge and 28. I was thinking of using the 20 for just the tops of the wings and the 28 for the details. having the thicker one along the top would make it more stable i would think...
but yeah, if you've got some time to answer that, i'd be honoured thanks!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sleetwealth In reply to Middy-Wolf [2008-08-24 20:36:29 +0000 UTC]

I think its 26 gauge wire, but they dont have the labels on em anymore. I used a heavier gauge on my latest fairy for the top wire and some of the inner wires. Ill be posting her.
I think its logical the heavier wire will help keep the wing perky.
