Description
In the future, spherical wormhole "gates" allow for faster-than-light travel. They can only be created as nearby pairs, so the exit gate must first be carried across interplanetary or interstellar distances at slower-than-light speeds before it can be useful. Once set up however, the destination can be accessed instantaneously by ships, (as long as their size does not exceed that of the throat.) A train-like network of FTL travel is being gradually developed across colonized space.Related content

This SO reminds me of a story I read many years ago, of which I can only recall part of the title- the fact that there were 90,000 gates across the galaxy(?)... but no one had a map of them anymore, so getting around was still slow!
