Description
Gateships are huge trans-skein transport vessels that are able to cross the vastness of the cosmos in moments. They employ exotic alien technology little understood by the humans that have found and learned to operate them. Each gateship - of which there are twelve - is unique in structure and appearance (although they have similar forms), able to accommodate thousands of human ships in their cavernous interiors. Exploration of the space within the gateships reveals that the internal dimension exceed the external ones leading to the conclusion that somehow space itself within the ships is being manipulated and "stretched". Most ships carried are accommodated in the area adjacent to the mouth and few venture further into the coiling form of these vessels since rumors abound of unspeakable terrors that lurk in the depths of the coil, diabolical manifestations that are the consequence of manipulating the skein. Gateships are said to be sentient and although not controlled, are guided by a small and highly select sect of priest-like "vanguards" who use arcane methods to communicate with the ships. Gateships have become critical lifelines between the many remote human nations and as such are treated with the greatest reverence by even the most powerful monarchs.
