Personality: Kurai can be kind of a downer to be around. He's relatively quiet, which can be nice when you want a moment to yourself but he does tend to loom silently in the background without realizing it. He's rather relaxed and likes to avoid or diffuse conflict when he can. His downer attitude can come from the fact that he still hasn't fully recovered from his grief and carries it with him. He can usually be found quietly brooding somewhere and is the first to assume a worst case scenario. He's kind of shy around people too thanks to having grown up in such a solidarity style. He doesn't real know how to talk to people and he's afraid of missing social cues or upsetting them so he tends to avoid conversation.

On the flip side Kurai's rather loyal to the few he has let into his life. He dedicated himself to them and would never lie to them. He's kind and sympathetic and is more willing to open himself to people who expose weakness to him (willingly or unwillingly) because he can relate to that easier and seeks to ease their suffering. He's also rather artistic and it shows the most through his poetry, though, good luck trying to ever get him to share it would you.

History: Kurai was born in Kalos to a single mother, originally an immigrant from Sinnoh. She moved to Kalos while pregnant to start a fresh life with her son, wishing to leave behind her life in her original country. He rarely questioned the fact that he didn't have a father and it seemed his mother never had any intentions of telling him about her life before him. Not that he minded. They lived modestly if not somewhat below the poverty line. His mother struggled to support the two of them in a new country but refused to move back to Sinnoh. She would raise her son here even if she had to work long hours with multiple jobs. Thanks to this though Kurai was often left alone. He became rather withdrawn and while he found solace in the quite, became used to it too quickly. By the time he was old enough to realize his mother was overworking herself to death there wasn't much he could do. He was still too young to get a job of his own and its not as if he knew of any ways to help her. Around the time of his tenth birthday she simply collapsed from stress and passed away later in the year. Kurai figured he'd be sent to an orphanage but it seemed his mother had reached out to his distant father shortly before her passing. The man was happy to take his young son under his wing and the boy was whisked off to his... castle? Mansion? Kurai really wasn't sure what his house was-- just that there was a lot of it. He lived alone in the house for thirteen years, filling his time with kendo and writing poetry to distract himself from the grief. He never really was able to get over the death of his mother and with his father being out on business so much it was the same story of him being left alone at home. He barely graduated high school and chose to bum around his father's home for the next five years before he was introduced to his two younger siblings. A pair of twins thirteen years his junior. He was enamored with the two of them, even if he was a bit old to be hanging around them. For the first time in his life he wasn't alone, and he loved it.It was two years later when a mysterious letter would arrive in the mail addressed to him, from Sinnoh. It had a return address but the letter was written in a language he couldn't understand. Rather than take the time to get it translated he headed out to find whoever had sent this letter. If it was from Sinnoh it might've been from his mother's family. Maybe there were others out there like his two younger siblings who needed him. He set out into the night on a quest to get to bottom of this and was never seen again by his family. Getting to Sinnoh on his father's money wasn't a difficult task but the hike into the woods to find the location of his mystery sender was. Weirdly enough while wandering through the woods he started to wonder if this was even the right forest. Hadn't his letter had a different location on it when he had left? Had it changed? No... surely he was just remembering wrong. When he finally stumbled upon the grand chateau nestled deep in the center of the woods he figured this must've been the location, and headed in.
