Description

There was no better place to buy a horse other than the crowded streets of GolegΓ£ in November, or so Alex had told him. Of course, that had been before he'd walked off to buy roasted chestnuts and left Shane all alone to find his way to somewhere other than the middle of the road, as he waited for the other to return. He'd just found a relatively quiet spot - right next to a pristine white trailer that seemed to had never even been in the vicinity of a horse before - when Alex returned, a sweet-smelling paper cone in his hands and a wide smile on his face. Shane didn't lose a moment, immediately burying his fingers in the cone and extracting a few chestnuts despite the other's protests, wrapping his hands around them to try and warm up his fingers. "Have you had your fun, then? We have work to do," he said, careful not to burn his fingertips as he peeled off one of them.

The rise on the number of kids - and adults, though in a far smaller number - who came to Nightingale to learn how to ride still puzzled Shane, especially seeing as he didn't believe Juan's theory that they were all preparing for the time when they could no longer afford a car. Even if it made sense, he knew very well the man had been joking. Still, reasons were hardly important now; the fact that they were running out of lesson horses and were in dire need of new ones was, though. Sara had sent them off to find something suitable as soon as they'd set foot on the parking lot. Alex, though, seemed to have other ideas, seeing as, so far, he'd led Shane everywhere but to an actual sale.

"Yes, yes, I know," Alex replied, even as his eyes followed a couple of Friesians picking their way past them. Rolling his eyes, Shane snagged the collar of his coat, half-dragging the man away. He didn't know where the promised horses for sale were - Alex eventually noticed that, of course, and pulled away from his grasp, very deliberately turning to the opposite direction. Shane huffed, not really bothering to voice a protest as he followed.

Far from the bustling streets, a group of horses stood quietly, tied to a wall under the careful watch of a few men that sat nearby, smoking under the light of the street lamps. While Alex walked off to talk to one of them, - goodness, the man seemed to know everyone everywhere - Shane moved to the horses, seeing as that was why they were here in the first place. Or, well, at least so he hoped. It would be terribly typical of Alex to bring him all the way down here just to go off and talk to some mates he hadn't seen in God knew how long.

His gaze was almost immediately attracted to a small appaloosa, before settling on the solid-looking cob that stood next to him, head resting on his companion's back as he tried to take a peek as to what was going on. "Hey, Alex, do you think - oh, just forget it." He wasn't even listening, after all, immersed as he was in some conversation with words spewing far too quickly for him to even try to understand. One of the men approached, all smiles and quick sentences, and it took Shane half a minute of frantically waving at Alex for the other to notice and return to his side.

In the end, they left with four horses, all of which, the men had guaranteed, were calm and collected, suitable for children. Shane hadn't been willing to believe it at first; however, after the four followed them back to the temporary camp they'd set on the outskirts of the Fair without so much as batting an eye, it was starting to sound very possible.

I didn't see that coming. :I Just joking. (but it's almost true, I was prepared on wings) I really like how you colored the left horse's butt with those light strokes.

OH. MY. LORD. I want castaΓ±as. Like NOW. I hate you for that -_- These two are absolutely stunning! I love their colours and the dapples on the bay, and of course, this crosshatchy sherlock homes shading you're going with. And the expression on the appalosa just looks sooooo freaking sweet! I just wanna reach out and squish him.Β

Eheheheh. Don't worry, I want them too. We still don't have them here for sale and that's a bit maddening. >_> Thank you so much! Eheh, it seems I will really have to start using this style from now on. The Appy is a very sweet boy. I hate the face I have no time at all to draw, I really want to draw all my babies a bit more. :/

You're very welcome! How did you get it to look like that Β

sobreiros In reply to ShiaWolfe [2013-10-26 10:34:06 +0000 UTC]

Well, the outline and most of the shading is done with a black ball-point pen. After that it's scanned, that layer set to "Overlay" and I do the flat colours underneath it. c: It takes a lot of tweaking, though!

ShiaWolfe In reply to sobreiros [2013-10-26 14:20:24 +0000 UTC]

Mhmm...that's interesting though. I have tried that way before, but always put the layer to multiply. But I shall try 'overlay' next time

But it looks awesome the way it came out!Β

sobreiros In reply to ShiaWolfe [2013-10-27 10:59:05 +0000 UTC]

Multiplying, I've found, makes everything way too dark. But if you set the layer to Overlay, you'll have to choose darker colours than usual to do the flat colouring, because that set lightens everything under it.

Thank you!

ShiaWolfe In reply to sobreiros [2013-10-27 14:29:52 +0000 UTC]

Mhmm, that's VERY true. And it's annoyed me that it's so dark in the past, but now I know "Overlay" is something to try out! Whoot! Thank you! Β

No problem Β

Multiply is nice for lines, overlay is good for greyscales/traditionally done shading. That's how I see it.

Mhmm. I will totally keep that in mind!! Thanks so much! Especially since a lot of what I do is traditional xDΒ

sobreiros In reply to ShiaWolfe [2013-10-28 20:24:10 +0000 UTC]

No worries! I always do my lines traditionally, I can't ink with my tablet, I find it awfully boring!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

ShiaWolfe In reply to sobreiros [2013-10-28 21:52:12 +0000 UTC]

Me neither! I end up getting annoyed because my lines are always very sketchy, not clean or anything.Β
