Description This is the sketch stage of the big project that's currently consuming all of my art time. I was gonna wait and post it on the same day as the full color (oh yes, it will be colored) but it's gonna be a while before that part is done and I felt bad for neglecting my DeviantART. My original plan was to simply do a re-draw of "Puny Pirate Protege" (which I first sketched on July 30th, 2018: www.deviantart.com/socksthemut… ) and see how much I've improved in a year. But my insane brain had other ideas. Yes, let's draw that picture again but why not add to it... and by that I mean let's do a whole damn book cover for Brahma Bear's fantastical fan fiction "Once a Pirate"!

I crammed as much onto this page as humanly possible but there was still so much more I wanted to add that I didn't have room for. Like the spiders and the little girl and the varans and the crazy car chase and -- none of this will make any sense if you haven't read the fan fiction. Please do so immediately: www.fanfiction.net/s/5659076/1… I promise you won't regret it. This story has honestly inspired me more than anything else -- with the exception of my Scar addiction, which K&K is now equal to. It explores what TaleSpin always should have and fits so well that it feels canon to me. Hell, it is canon as far as I'm concerned. Why aren't you making a (2D animated) movie of this, Disney!?

Anyways! Where to even start? There's so much going on here, haha. Well I guess let's point out the obvious first: a brand new take on "Puny Pirate Protege"! I kept the same poses and expressions but made them smaller so I could fit (a lot) more behind them. While still far from perfect I do think I've improved some since last summer. The classic scene from Plunder & Lightning of course had to be in there too. You know, last summer I started printing OaP and made that image the cover. I never did get to finish that project because my printer hated me after page 421 or so. But I really do want a physical copy of this story. XD

Where was I? Bagheera, Myra and Tyler. Three characters I've never tried before but wanted to have on here. I have plenty of nitpicks with them (and they're very small on the page) but I tried and they might end up looking better once they're colored. I really love the fact that Bagheera is in this fan fic, I always thought he should've been in the show -- and no, none of Shere Khan's look-a-like panther pilots are Baggy. Not officially anyway. Richter. Man, I love to hate that guy. XD I honestly don't think I did him justice here, he probably needs twice as many rippling muscles as I gave him... maybe that's why he's so pissed off. My anatomy will never be perfect but I have fun trying just the same.

Speaking of anatomy, woulja look at that big ol' deformed dragon up there! I think I was subconsciously drawing from the memory of the board game "Fantasy Forest" (a childhood favorite of mine) when I sketched that. The playing board had a big dragon in the upper corner in a similar pose but I used no references here... which is probably painfully obvious. XD Still, I guess it's not too terrible for a dragon. Hopefully it'll also look better in color.

It's a bird, it's a plane...! Oh wait, it is a plane -- and more than one. Yes, I'm quite insane for even attempting this because I can not draw planes. There's a border of sorts around the whole page (that dips under the dragon) that, when colored, will be more noticeable and will kind of blend everything together. The Iron Vulture is partially hidden behind (what will be) the clouds and the Sea Duck is half behind the border. I'm hoping to have it all mesh together as I finish coloring it, from jungle to rock to lava. It all makes sense in my head, I swear.

There will always be a bit of a surprise where "Once a Pirate" is currently scribbled but I'll save that reveal for the colored version. Which you can all expect, hopefully, by the end of the month. I'll probably work on this little by little and might take breaks to do new sketches here and there because this is honestly one of the biggest projects I've ever attempted. ...... Eventually I wanna do a cover like it for "No Time for a Hero", too.

Thanks! I spent way too long on all the little details and the coloring process is taking even longer... hopefully it'll be worth it in the end. XD

All I can say right now is, wow! Oh, I see little Myra in there! The little vixen who makes my heart flutter as much as Katie Dodd! Now, if I can only get my own scrambled mess out of my brain, Katie might end up with an ace pilot for a sister soon...

Thank you! Myra is soo small on the page and this was my first time drawing her, I'm glad she's recognizable. I'll have to try my hand at her again sometime, always did like her design.

Ooh, now that was a fun song! I'm surprised I hadn't heard it before. Thanks for sharing! Have you heard "Airship Pirate" by Abney Park? It's so perfect -- someone even made a TS music video with it: www.youtube.com/watch?v=22NrFk…

You are welcome! I had NEVER heard of that one until now!

The one I gave was by Miracle of Sound, an independent band in Ireland.

Tell me, do you know of Assassin's Creed?

I've been looking up more of their songs and I really like their style! I often listen to music while I sketch and I can tell some of these are gonna be on my playlist.

I've heard of it but I don't know much about it, never played the game.

I knew you would enjoy their work.

This particular one is based on AC4 Black Flag, the entry involving pirates. Cool, right?

Holy shit!  I don't have much or a better articulation on how I feel about this, except, holy shit!  When you mentioned that you had something special in the works involving OaP, my mind translated that into "dragon" (didn't say anything in case I was wrong).  I was a big goose bump of excitement waiting to see what you were coming up with.  I never thought it'd be anything like this.

Dragons and ruins and airplanes (oh my!).  I've started at this thing for several minutes and I am amazed it even exists.  Book cover, yes, and it's also like a movie poster!  I'm floored at the amount of work that went into it.  Just wow.  The new Puny Pirate Protege, though I still love the old one too, does reflect that you're getting used to drawing these guys good.

Also, I was really touched by your mentioning that you actually printed the story out.  I wish I had known, I would have tried to put together something properly formatted, print-worthy, and rechecked for typos (which I know are all over the place).  I feel like I'm being shorter on words than this entry deserves,  but know that you've made me feel great, and you have my heartfelt thanks and appreciation. ^_^

'There will always be a bit of surprise'... I smell a hint.  I'm so looking forward to the final version!

Aw, thank you! I'm so happy you like this messy monstrosity-in-the-works. Seeing it as a movie poster really fits considering the story always plays in my head just like an animated movie. Now that's something I'd pay to see in theaters! Despite my nitpicks (I'll try and make Richter look better in the final version) I've been having an incredible amount of fun with this project. Just diving back into the story has been an inspirational trip and a reminder of why this obsession is still going strong a year later. It was nearly impossible to decide what to include but I wanted to capture the overall feel of the story -- and of course there had to be a dragon. The things I couldn't fit can always be sketches for another day.

I haven't finished printing all of OaP yet, my printer tends to jam up and after a few hundred pages I got frustrated with fighting it. But I'd love to get the rest printed eventually and put it all  together like an actual book. Here's the silly little cover I put together last year:

Whoops, I meant to say "also" not "always" in that last paragraph. Derp! But it could still be a hint, I won't say either way -- and there will always be surprises to come.

That looks so cool!  I'm pretty much beside myself that you made a cover for it.  I'll have you know that it's gone straight to my head, thank you.  ^_^
