Heya! Commenting from
The first thing that caught my eye with this piece is the stunning layout and excellent composition. You have created a very balanced composition where the character is in the very center of the focus and everything else around him supports the flow in the piece. The fence, the electric lines and the horizon guide the viewer's gaze first to the character and then towards whatever he is looking at. My only tiny tiny nitpick would be his ear nearly touching the edge of the canvas, a little more space above him would give the image more feel of open space as well and also heighten the sky nicely.
This image is also a great example of storytelling - we have plenty of details to give us hints about the character and also about the environment. The little things (such as the plane) make the viewer wonder about the character’s story and thoughts. The tattoos are also probably my favorite part!
Your coloring is lovely as well. The soft yet refined shading works nicely with the line art and you have created a lovely soft tone of evening or morning blush in the pic too. Everything works together and the colors are in harmony, yet with enough contrast and details to keep the image interesting. Shading supports the anatomy and I can’t say I find anything to complain about. Overall this piece is absolutely beautiful!!

Thank you very much for your wonderful feedback on my artwork and sorry I took so long to reply
I am very happy how much you like this work and personally, it is among my favourites as well. Your tip about the tight space between the end of the canvas and the tip of his ear is probably reasonable, as I received the same suggestion from a friend already. But I tend to strive against adding more verticality to my works as I fear they might lose their focus. But who knows, I only recently entered this set of mind in future, I'll be even more careful about my composition at least I can say that I have a good eye for it.
Very glad is to hear that you cought on my storytelling aspects, which is probably the main reason why I like this artwork so much. I added the plane (not only because I found it fitting to include one for the capital of Arizona) to point out to Jasper's future, hence why it is facing the same way as his gaze. That it could reflect his thoughts, however, wasn't intentional but might as well work as well. After all, interpretation is out of the creator's reach :3
But this wasn't the only symbol I added here and since you're the first one to point the first one out, I might as well share the second with you...
You might have already noticed the cut fence, behind of it is the skyline of Phoenix, representing the high-society cut-off by the fence to separate the third-class people and the poverty they live in. It is also the goal for the people outside; to one day break out and enter a life of welfare. Of course, there are many ways to reach it. The no trespassing sign right above the cut spot is - of course - telling about the illegality of said action but also that some people use illegal means to reach this high-society, which is kinda what Jasper is about to do. And that's why the title of the image is; 'crossing the line'.

Everything is nice to hear! ^v^I actually haven't really gotten the concept of the rule of thirds as I think it is a broad term and the technique can be applied to something as simple as "place the object of interest in the centre of the image"
But well, I just an intermediate drawer, gonna learn a lot more in the future. Wish you a lot of experience to acquire for your artistic journey as well! And keep in mind to tell a story with your artworks too :3

Really? 4 focal points? That's something. I should do some research on this rule... I'll note it down for me so I don't forget it.
Thanks for the tip again with the golden ratio, at least I am familiar with that one ^v^

Hello! I'm from Project Comment. I'm gonna go ahead and get the good out first haha ^^
I've gotta say I love all of the small details that you put into the drawing; it shows you really pay attention to things like that. I've found that it always adds more realism and definition to artwork. For example, the plane in the sky, or the tiny rips in his tank top. Or the small details in the necklace. That's not to even mention the tattoos. I've been drawing for years and I've been too scared to give my characters tattoos besides one or something incredibly simple because I'm not able to do them properly haha. So to me all of the detail and just how you got the color so well amazes me. Even if it's a copy damnn XD Also the way you do folds in the clothes seems very accurate and proper to me, same with the way you do hands. I don't even want to know how long the fence took lmaoo, it looks really good as well.
Now for anything I can give tips on! ^^ In your shading, I would say to add extra colors such as deep purples, blues, and pinks just to give it and extra layer of definition. Mainly instead of using just a darker color of your base color. This is just a simple thing but I would also say to add more textures to the dirt. The last thing I would do anything about is probably the eye. I would have them possess a slightly more realistic shape to them and some deeper purple shading. Other than that, you've done a great job! ^^ Have a nice day/ night.

Souvillaine In reply to Kouuji [2019-07-07 13:35:00 +0000 UTC]
Hello there Kouji and I thank you for your feedback!
I'm glad this artwork is so appealing to you. many of the details are from real life images I took from the google street-view driving through the streets of Phoenix; the plane, fences, telephone mast and trespassing sign as well as the skyline all add to the realism :3
As for tattoos what's there to be scared of? Just try around. Either you make a motive like the cat-skull and dream-catcher and use a transform tool or you do one of those covering tats with symbolism and shapes... the choice is yours, take inspiration from real life examples.
The fence didn't take much time by the way. Whenever you do a complicated pattern like this; fill a whole canvas just with this pattern and you are able to use it over and over.
As for your tip, I'm willing to try what you suggested, but I am so thrown back and forth with my lighting techniques that I don't know what to stick with anymore Sometimes I render things, other times I attempt cell-shading, use dark ground colours and paint in the light... I decide upon the situation and guess the best approach.
Thanks again for your feedback and also have a nice day!

I understand what you're saying about the lighting and stuff; I usually like deeper colors added for a more dimensional effect, but I guess it all depends on a person's style though ^^
Anyways, you're welcome!

Great details though, the tattoos and the character design does really fit for Lord Beerus.

Well, you can always keep practicing with it if you like^^ I'm sure you'll get the hang of it if you do. And even though you're not satisfied again and again, at least you're testing it out anyway. Therefore, you'll be able to learn how it works better and be able to draw them in a way that satisfies you 100% (Kinda the same way how it works for any type of weakness for any artist really).

Souvillaine In reply to TaintedArtisan [2019-06-19 19:43:55 +0000 UTC]
Yes I think so too, although it would take a lot of practising for me until I felt truly 100% satisfied with an artwork. Often, I just continue because tweaking those minor percentage points on my satisfy meter would probably result in redrawing the whole thing in a slightly different way.
On the other hand; where'd be the point if you didn't have anything to improve on... an artistic dead-end, that's nothing I strive for...

Oi, really nice character design you have created here, it gives a good first impression about the characters personality, the tatoos and his posture add a lot to it.
I can only repeat what others said before me, your surface scattering and textureing/rendering are great, it was actually the first thing I noticed here (have you any tips for the process?),
the backgound and linework are very solid too.
I think I can't add much to what the others already said, outstanding work overall!

Hey there!
Sorry for the delayed answer, I got myself heavily into drawing the past two days.
And thank you very much for your feedback on my work, it is no problem at all if others have already said what you think about it. It only encourages me to head to this very direction. Sadly, I can't really give any advice for the process of subsurface scattering particularly. It was more an insecure back and forth but if you have any questions in general, feel free to ask me here or on discord.
Have a nice and relaxing weekend!

Ooh, a hairless cat! I honestly thought his appearance was just as a result of the sketching process, and that you would add fur to him in the final version, but nope! I guess it makes sense, considering where he lives*. And it allows him to more easily have those wicked tattoos. Now I'm really curious as to his history and what he's involved in (seems to be some form of heist), and how this ties into the other widely disparate elements of your universe (that is, if it does at all)... I wonder, have you ever thought of doing a webcomic or something to further your story development/get it out there?
*Speaking about that, I wish the North American monsoon didn't exist so Phoenix could be even hotter. I mean, it has never gotten to the high-120s °F or recorded a Century Night, unlike Death Valley or the banks of the Colorado, despite its lower latitude and urban heat island effect. Pathetic! (/s. Partially.)
Small pet peeve: The reason why the ears of felids (and canids, etc.) are situated more on the top of the head is because of their small cranial capacity. With an increase in brain size, they'd naturally migrate more to the sides. Having that not happen would probably be an anatomical nightmare. Because it's so common in anthro art and the fur and other elements add plausible deniability, I typically don't bring it up, but I wanted to get it off my chest here.

Souvillaine In reply to GrantExploit [2019-06-11 20:04:50 +0000 UTC]
Hi there mate, I always love to read your comments, just as a side not
Yeah, he is a hairless cat, I usually always indicate fur in my linework because of my insecurity to strive from them when I colour. I treat my linework like a colouring book to be honest... because it doesn't happen rarely that the end result doesn't look as good as imagined from the WIP state I now publish. The only reason why he is hairless (as far as I believe) is to show these tattoos on him. Without a doubt, it is hard to draw an anthro with tattoos based on a species with fur... it's a real hassle xD
But one of my close pals has a character which I believe approaches this problem with a quite direct approach, check it out if you want: Yvette Novak 2019 Sheet Part 2
If you want to know more about Jasper and his place in the world, I did a character question sheet a couple of years ago: Character Questions with: Jasper Flay It is written and designed to show as much about the character as possible and - at the same time - bring his personality across. He doesn't have a role in my universe per se, but who could say what exactly my universe could be, right? I just like to say to myself; I have several characters that build a universe around themselves, and some just happen to meet in the same. So I basically create a character and then decide whether or not he or she could fit in. Currently, I have one set in our world, one in a sci-fi world that entices with a desert region. I have the mid-world between the one of the living and dead and sometimes worlds that are based on the real world but were altered so they cannot be working together.
This wouldn't be a mess, obviously, if I would cherish a more serious approach with the settings... I like the freedoms I give myself :3
And thank you a ton for that precious anatomy tip! I probably would have continued to give my characters primitive brains ^v^ I only need to figure out how to apply them to already existing characters and their design...

GrantExploit In reply to Souvillaine [2019-06-13 19:04:13 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, I know Yvette. In fact, I think I may have known about her before I knew about you. Yes, tattoos on furred species is a problem... in the only universe of mine where they exist* (It's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow), if having a furless part of the body is not desirable, it would probably be done by localized genetic engineering by painting the above area or by directly addressing each follicle for finer designs... which could also be used for giving people anime hair. You could use that idea in a setting where genetic technology is advanced enough.
Oooh, I gotta check that out.
So you're a very "bottom-up", character-first worldbuilder, which is very much the opposite approach as mine. Wow, all this time I thought you had one setting/universe, messily tied together as it may be, when apparently you have several contradictory ones as me... This would be a whole lot easier to tell if you named 'em, but then again naming's easier when each one has an intention behind it.
You're welcome! Your craniums are of reasonable size, just ear position is occasionally off.
*Well, in Àli Dãn Celec the relod'al are often richly feathered, but there are typically large enough open patches (in non-private areas) for tattoos. For the reboro'al or yichanre'al, it may be a problem, but I've never thought of them wanting to get tattoos before...

If it comes to storytelling, I believe it is less intricate and more fun to start with a tube-like view on the world. I doN't like to establish a fantasy world with a big opener, but a very subtle one; I show my world out of the eyes of a single character and their surroundings. This makes approaching a story quite the adventure itself as you don't know what your incredible mind can come up next :3
