Interestingly, I was talking with one of my editors about whether or not Nyx "was herself" or whether she was under some sort of external influence when she was forced to grow up and become NMM. His view is that she was fully Nyx in this scene and not changed apart from having the new memories and the adult body. My view is that there had to be some sort of influence that the spell had on her because her behavior is totally different. My contention is that Nyx was a "good child" just moments before, and I'm sorry, but if you have the absolute trauma of what happened in the previous few episodes, a child is not going to suddenly become a stable Muahahahaaa!!! Evil Villain without any signs of massive confusion or stress.

Thing is with the spell finished she also retained all the memories of what she was thinking as NMM.
That's what was missing before, she only got a glimpse of them in chapter 3.
Now everything makes sense to her again.

Also, the "Blessing" was missing from her transformation spell. If Nexus was thinking straight, he would have implanted that into filly-Nyx the same as he did with all the cult members, prior to forcing her to grow up. It serves the plot nicely, but it just makes Nexus look a little foolish.

Well considering Nyx is Nightmare Moon he probably thought that she already HAD the Blessing.

My editor suggests that it's because it was bound to Nexus that he couldn't just transfer the whole thing over to her (decent reasoning, admittedly) although he could give parts of it to others apparently. It's a bit of a plot hole, but forgivable. As for Nyx already having it, well evidence suggests she wouldn't have since she was a very good and kind child up until that point. Not a huge deal, as all stories have their flaws. Pen probably just didn't think it through completely. ^_^ It's funny how we hold our books to much higher standards of non-contrivance than Hollywood movies which are practically saturated with them.

The blessing inside Nexus is actually the final piece of Nightmare Moon. It's all her wrath and hatred.

Oh, I get it. So basically it would have been dormant or something while she was a "good child"? Cause she was obviously not malicious or anything before the grow-up spell. Maybe he thought it would emerge once the spell was finished. I'm still surprised at Nyx's behavior. I'd have had her more traumatized by all those memories and the experience of being forced to grow up, not to mention the aftermath of her abduction. She seems perfectly content in her new identity. But she had to be for the reveal scene to play out like it did. So it serves Pen's intentions for the plot.

Just a quick note: Isn't adult-Nyx's mane supposed to be normal? As opposed to the ethereal flow of Nightmare Moon's mane? I'd have to check the book again, but I thought that was the case.

Ahh. Alrighty. I know it was "normal" prior to the grow-up-spell, and normal after she was restored (and presumably grew up naturally). I couldn't remember whether the mane got ethereal when she was forced to be an adult or not. Guess it did. ^_^ It's been a while since I read the original.

I have been following your comic adaption of "Past Sins" for some time now. As a fan of the character, I have read all of Pen Strokes stories concerning her (and also Reality Checks. His are good, even if he is a tad unhinged...) and so was delighted to see a comic adaptation of it.
When I first saw this particular page, I found myself looking at the pictures before I read the dialogue. Your depiction of Nightmare Moon / Nyx is absolutely lovely. I also like the way you handled her fangs. Pen Stroke never talks about her teeth--it wasn't an issue when the story was first written! However, the show has retconned Nightmare to match her Season 2 appearance. Now, I'm on the fence with the fangs; they honestly made Nightmare look more goofy than scary. Her latest appearance in "The Cutie Remark" made her look more like a jackal with cat eyes than a pony!
It's hard to be intimidated by a pony when you have the strange urge to scratch her behind the ears!
But I do like how you render Nightmare's fangs here. Admittedly, she does resemble Chrysalis in some regards, but they do utilize similar designs for both mares anyway. I like to think that Spell Nexus pulled no stops in recreating Nightmare Moon, and made sure she had fangs to up the fear factor, despite Nightmare having no practical use for them.
She is still a pony, after all!
Moving on, I think the design of the un-barded Nightmare is lovely with the hair visible. I also like the various facial expressions she exhibits on this page, as well as the ones Diamond and Silver exhibit when Nightmare calls them out. I liked this scene in the novel; it was very clever, as it allowed her to take revenge on the two while under the pretense of thanking them. (I would have loved to have read DT's thoughts at this moment!) It also shows a slight difference between Nightmare Moon and Nightmare Nyx; Nightmare Nyx is actually very clever and sly, while Nightmare Moon is actually a bit more dense, at least by show canon.
This become very obvious in the coming chapters...
In conclusion, thank you very much for the work you put into these comics! I look forward to your next update!

Alpha: Of course it was there doings. Why did I not see it before. It was that day that the spark of darkness was ignited. As I theorized long ago since it was Twilights blood that created that was used in the ceremony her magic her friendship unlocked a new being in the great Nightmare Moon. This being was Nyx who became the dominant side of this being which was only strengthened by the kindness that Twilight and others showed her. However, Nyx would be exposed to dark magic or some traumatic experience, such as oh lets see being forcibly taken away from her mother!, or dark magic in general then it was possible that the darkness that was once in her heart would grow. But, I never thought that the cruel prank of those two brats could be powerful enough to trigger the dark spark. Then again in my reality Twilight never told me where she found Nyx that day. So it dose make sense why I never thought of this incidence to be that relevant. Well besides making both Twilight and I angry at Spoiled Rich.

once I asked Pen Stroke if Nyx has a fang. He said that he doesn't know himself and may be NMM made false fangs just to look scary.

Amazing, isn't it? One minute, Nyx is crying and screaming for Celestia to take her back to Twilight. The next minute, she is Nightmare Moon; memories, magic, and everything. She is the Mare in the Moon reborn!
Although something seems a little off with her in those first three panels…
