I would love to see these things still roaming around in North and South America.

The technique and photorealism are amazing, but the fact that you've used a forrest predator as a base for an open plain predator is a bit conflicting, it looks a bit too "opbvious" in the grass
But you have nicely portrayed the perception of smilodon as a "sabretoothed tiger", which was not exactly true

There are different views what kind of predator Smilodon was and I just happened to pick that one. And isn't Smilodon known as the sabertoothed tiger/cat?!

Of course it is known as "sapbertoothed tiger", and of course it is a "true sabertoothed cat", (there was a group of "flalse sabertoothed cats" caled nimravids (Nimravidae), which were more primitive than "true" cats (Felidae).
Smilodon was much closer to a lion in terms of lifestyle than to a tiger - cooperating plain predator vs. solitary forest predator - so it was a bit striking that you chose the very opposite than I would expect, there is nothing more to it. I told you I like this picture a lot, I just wanted to throw in my two cents.

it's great! and i love that you call this a photo-manipulation and not just a "painting." i also like what you've did with the tiger markings-- a little subdued, but still visible.

my only crit si the light on the creature itself; the manipulation job on him is otherwise perfect.

Thank u very much! And u are right about the lighting. The original body didn't have lighting almost at all and I was afraid that if I do too much lighting to this I would ruin it. And thanx for noticing the subdued tiger markings, apperantly this wasn't good enough to get to the gallery of Origin-of-Mammals club. The founder of that club criticized about everything on this work including the tiger markings that I purposely. But still thanx, it's nice to get lil critic now and then

i can't stand talent-based clubs dude. they make me really sad for Deviantart.
i'm glad to see your work here in Ars Fatalis, though!
and yeah sometimes as an artist.. you gotta make the call to either go bold or decide NOT to ruin something by experimenting lol. experiments can always wait for their time.

SporemasterHIMPO In reply to Zimices [2012-03-27 11:09:18 +0000 UTC]

Thank u sir and I did this by first getting my hands on some pictures of tigers and then cutting them then manipulating their size and stuff and finally painting on them.

Interesting, I like the marks and the small mane. By the way, do you use any skeletal reference?
