Description I hardly ever ship any characters. But when I do, I do so passionately.

I've seen the current Finnish production of Jekyll and Hyde the musical six times now. Next Saturday, I'm going for the 7th time, to say goodbye to the soon-to-be-closed production. I love the show. The script is a mess, some of the songs are less than stellar... But it looks absolutely beautiful, and the actors do an amazing job, so I still enjoy it immensely. (Here's my review. )

What's more, each time, I've felt more and more emotional about the relationship in between Jekyll and his friend Utterson. A friend who's seen multiple productions tells me this is the first time she's seen Utterson as a wholly developed character. I guess that's not too surprising – in a way, Utterson's purpose in the plot is largely to give Jekyll someone to talk to, so I suppose it'd be easy to forget to give the character depth. But in the Finnish production... Firstly, Utterson is awesome all on his own, and secondly, the relationship in between him and Jekyll is really touching. You feel they really love each other. Maybe not necessarily in the romantic sense as I've depicted here (though, when it comes to this production, I think it's also a valid viewpoint to interpret it that way) – but they're clearly the best of friends and mean a lot for each other. At the end, I feel just as bad for Utterson as I do for Emma.

Somehow, during the six times I've seen the show, it has escalated to this. The character designs are of course based on the Finnish production but they're no carbon copies, I have mostly drawn them from memory here. I don't think the first one's quite finished enough to be uploaded on its own, so I added a couple of doodles in the bottom to make up for it... Quantity before quality, am I right?

Wow! This is amazing! I saw a play of Jekyll and Hyde recently. It was a steampunk Jekyll and Hyde with the interesting twist of having Jekyll and Utterson as lovers. Love this art! Keep it up

Thank you so much!!

Wow. That production sounds so interesting – steampunk with a Jekyll/Utterson twist? That's two good things rolled into one! I'd love to hear more about this production, and especially to see photos. Do you know if they have any photos or other info online?

No problem! The theatre company was called 'Sell A Door' and they're currently touring the UK. There should be a few reviews and information online

Thank you so much for this information! I've now checked out whatever reviews and such I've been able to find, and it seems like a really interesting adaptation. Apparently it had its own set of problems, but it seems like a very intriguing and rather dark version (especially compared to the silliness of the musical...). I'd love to see a Finnish production of the play one day!

No problem! Of course it had it's rough moments but I suppose every production does! The musical is fantastic I must agree with you! It was a rather intriguing production. A Finnish production would be awesome! For studying the book for so long it's nice to see stage adaptations to freshen your view a bit! Glad to help

So you are a big musical goer, right? I do not know Jekyll and Hyde but got interested in the character, Utterson. If they have Japanese production of it, I will check that out.

Quantity before quality...I agree. Artists should memorize things by drawing with their hands!

Haha, yeah – to put it lightly, that could be said... Going to see musicals is my dearest hobby, actually. I see all the shows I can – and I guess I'm lucky to live in Finland, since theatres around here tend to do a lot of them! Here's to hoping you'll find a Japanese production of J&H! It has its flaws, sure, but I think it's still a fascinating show! I'd love to see different productions of it, I've only seen the current Finnish one so far.
