Description Someone asked me to upload this... And I guess it's logical continuation to my previous deviation , even though the genders seem to have changed back.
It's from last year, which is why it looks different compared to my current stuff. It was also done for a specific project, but I don't think that's ever going to happen - and if it is, I'd rather do new illustrations than use the old ones anyway (the one who this concerns knows who they are).

Fun fact: I drew this at school, and at some point my art teacher started hovering behind me. She told me "that reminds me of a book called Les MisΓ©rables... I doubt you've read it, but somehow..." It was fun telling her that yeah, I'm indeed drawing Valjean - and also flattering that my view of the characters is clear enough for them to be recognised like that!

Les Mis is not mine.

LOL for drawing a Javert/Valjean chase scene that looks like none of the book ones. XD And poor, poor Catherine... that doll was a work of art! This one looks like something Eponine and Azelma play with and taunt Cosette with, until Valjean came along...

My mental vision of Catherine has never been particularily clear, hence the execution here...

Watch Shojo Cosette. The most accurate, book-true, version of Les Miz you can ever see.

In the book.... Catherine is one of those antique, china-faced, lace-dressed, gorgeous dolls that is the best for the time, but only the richest can afford to gift such a doll to their child (hence the Thenardiers' reaction when they saw Valjean's "charity" upon Cosette.)

In ways... adult!Cosette grows to look like the doll that Valjean gifts her when they first meet. Very beautiful, well-kept, well dressed, and QUIET. Can you guess why?

I've watched Shojo Cosette. And while I can agree that it was very accurate and book-true (apart from the fates of Gavroche and Javert, of course x__x), I have to say I also found it the most boring adaptation I've ever seen. If I want to spend +20 hours on Les Mis, I think I'd rather reread the book. With proper cuts and only 20 or so episodes, Shojo Cosette could've been pretty amazing even for my tastes, I think!

BORING? -WHAT???- Not in the least. It does give Cosette more of a backstory - but coming from a Sailor Moon perspective, I liked it. If I have to be told the background of a kid in anime, I am glad it was Cosette, and not Eponine - who was, now how did Hugo put it - ah yes, "a copy of her mother at that tender age." I think he was trying to make us understand that she could not help being cruel, because her mother was... I like Hugo. Don't like Eponine (her mother ruined her for me).

20+hours? YOU MUST BE A FAST READER! I dwell that much time just on the Javert and Valjean scenes...! If I want to get into the history of the time, I spend as much time on ALL THE BACKGROUND! It's like reading War and Peace for me - OMG, I loved all the Kutuzov background there! (less aristocracy there would have been a plus, tho! Ugh.)

I do wish there were scenes between Javert and Valjean more towards the end, though -- if they saved Gavroche and Javert, they could have saved Valjean too, AND made Javert spend time with him -- maybe see Valjean become Headmaster of that school of his - and re-hash the Major/Inspector storyline towards the end, with a school arc...

To each their own! I'm afraid I like short series the best... When it comes to the +20 hours thing, doesn't mean that I can read the book that fast – but that if an adaptation takes longer than that, then I'd rather take the time to read the actual book. Actually, I'm a rather slow reader, especially when it comes to classics.

...and again.

I love this drawing of yours

And thanks!

Haha, thanks!

Show us some of your works sometimes! Yeah, Copics take some practice - I'm not that good at them either, still, I keep Photoshopping away color that leaks to the wrong side of the line with almost every drawing... I should use them a bit more nowadays though, I've been doing too much digital stuff lately!

trenchWeasel [2012-07-30 18:33:59 +0000 UTC]

Love it! Is the background done in copic too? I could never fill in large areas with copic without it ending up all streaky and obnoxious. Yours looks amazing...

It's a good thing your art teacher recognized the story, because out of context, this scene could look sort of...sinister. You know, old guys stealing little children and such. You'd be thinking, well at least the police are after him...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Starlene In reply to trenchWeasel [2012-07-30 19:31:21 +0000 UTC]

Yep, everything's done with Copics. Backgrounds are awful with those, and this one's pretty blotchy... But I guess I've done worse!

Haha, yeah, true that! :'D

this!

If non-fan recognize that this is Les Mis, it is all OK. Good job!γ€€I like both of your past and current works.

Now, I don't have confidence to let non-fan recognize that my "Les Mis" works is an illustration of Hugo's "Les Miserables ". I already go deeply into the fandom too much , and it is very difficult to come back in the Les Mis beginners .

fun fact: Before joining in dA, I thought that all Europeans read the brick. Now I recognize that it was not truth.
