The first view of another place stuck in my favorite “twisted forties” alternate universe, Diesel City.
With this new Diesel City series, I plan to experiment with a slightly different twist from what I was used to do lately. Rather than entirely surreal, utopian visions, I will try to somehow stick more to our own “real” universe—what it used to be, at least, since it seems I am stuck myself forever into that vintage mood—to spot and emphasize the dieselpunk quality in it. The idea would be to offer visions of places and sceneries that “could almost have been,” to bring to (no)light one or two of these alternate dimensions that probably surround us, that we can only get some glimpses of, thanks to a particular lighting, an unusual atmosphere, a strange je-ne-sais-quoi that just floats in the air sometimes, in some places.
Just like beauty, maybe dieselpunk is in the eye of the beholder, after all. But I’m probably being way too ambitious...
