Description Fun work? Isn't that an oxymoron? What do you think?

This comics essay is part of a book called Brick by Brick, which I am now raising money to self publish on Kickstarter! There will be three essays in the book that I'm never going to publish online and you can buy a digital copy for only $5! Please take a look!

BalanComics [2013-10-30 23:09:20 +0000 UTC]

This is incredibly important, especially for people who do a lot of work by themselves - when you're by yourself, it's easy to beat yourself up for not working as hard as you "should", and start a cycle of self-loathing.  Break out of that by making it fun!

Self-discipline and "nose to the grindstone" are important qualities, but rather than being something wholly different than finding fun in your work, I would say they're highly related.  I mean, if you enjoy your work, wouldn't you do it every day?

Steve-C2 [2013-10-30 02:23:29 +0000 UTC]

I'll be honest, if you're thinking of uploading the methods to have fun, I'm eagerly awaiting it.  I do some things because, for me, the task itself is fun, or at least the end result is rewarding (My wife doesn't understand that I actually don't mind doing dishes, and in fact I kind of like it).

I suppose if I were to say that I was brought up "old school" with the notion of "use self discipline" and "put your nose to the grindstone" and "grin and bear it."  Having fun, was something that was rather idealistic.  Your paycheck is your reward.  However, I am finding, from personal experience, that this doesn't always work for everyone.  A new idea is being given to me, which is, "you can't work for just a paycheck."  That's great in concept, but actualizing the idea will be a challenge.

Once again, thank you for sharing your essays.

There is something called "Gamification", which is basically turning every task into a game or something fun.
If that was applied in daily life I bet daily life would be more enjoyable

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

StephenMcCranie In reply to Ailyric [2013-11-01 20:54:54 +0000 UTC]

Yep! Gamification is what my next essay will be about. Stay tuned!

RickGriffin [2013-10-28 18:19:26 +0000 UTC]

I have subscribed to this idea a long time ago. Finding the fun in everything is tricky though--sometimes it's just not "clicking"

The line after "We assume work is inherently hard" doesn't parse . . . missed a word?

StephenMcCranie In reply to RickGriffin [2013-10-29 15:55:09 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I need to fix that. I'll do that today.
