You know, I have agree with you, i have been fascinated how bondage causes women to be put in positions that show off curves and lines, like example a hogtie, causes the woman to arch her back showing a crescent curve. Its quite beautiful the way the human body can be an art form.

"The stigma of perverse objectification" I don't think your work is like that... In my opinion women has many forms of beauty & this is one of it!

If I ever do (and I very much plan to at *some* point), you have my promise that I'll post it on my profile here. I'll swing by to tap you on the shoulder so you can see it, too.

Seeing her tiara and maybe thinking she is a superheroine adds another aspect that I enjoy, the concept of power restrained. I love how a powerful superheroine can be restrained and that she may be shocked that it happened as she is not used to losing.

The Superheroine in peril is my favorite choice of damsel. It's the combination of the sexy costume, her being conquered despite her powers, her strength in the face of adversity, and the fact that she can take care of herself. You know that in any given story, she's going to get free, only to be captured another day! .... because, come on, she flies right into the face of danger. It's like she WANTS to get captured sometimes!

I like your description of bondage. This is truly how I see it too, like most bondage lovers and practitioners I guess. Revealing the inner beauty of a woman's body (any woman's body) is truly what it is all about. And about mutual trust too. Very far indeed from the unaware preconception of a vulgar and perverse objectification.

One major problem is people mentally place sexual inclinations into two categories... the stuff that turns them on... and the stuff that's sick. If it doesn't excite them, it MUST be sick! So if bondage is NOT someone's cup of tea, they immediately label it with negative connotations because of the inherent dangers it portrays... but it IS those very dangers that are the thrill and the ultimate intimacy of trust that make it such a powerful sexual experience.

Carles In reply to steveoreno [2011-02-28 23:45:22 +0000 UTC]
You are right about the judgmental comments, although in the place I live (Paris), I find a great deal of tolerance towards most inclinations. As a matter of fact, even the fetish imagery is becoming more and more mainstream in fashion, adds, and even some TV shows. Mind you, this is a place where you can have a national culture-oriented TV network broadcast a 1-hour show on Shibari at an hour of large audience (9:00 pm).
However, I would add another thing to the elements of trust and intimacy you cited: the sheer aesthetic component of bondage. Sometimes it almost has a "haute couture" feel to it, where the search for subtle equilibrium and construction is directed towards one goal: transcending the beauty of the female form. I do not really know at this point if it is still a purely sexual experience or something else.

steveoreno In reply to Carles [2011-03-01 01:01:50 +0000 UTC]
I know many places throughout Europe are far more tolerant of fetish imagery ... There's a solid and growing fanbase (no pun intended) here in the U.S., including several well publicized conventions, so it IS becoming more mainstream. The aesthetic component you mentioned is what I was kind of addressing in the original statement, to a lesser extent... alluding to how the use of ropes, straps, chains, and the accompanying apparel can sculpt the woman beyond the normal shape of the female form.
And you're right, it IS far more than purely sexual... it includes deeper elements of power, control, and surrender that go beyond the simple categorization of sex.
I just wish the we'd catch up to you guys when it comes to these sorts of things ... I sometimes feel things are moving in the opposite direction. We're the country that flipped out because Janet Jackson's boob sorta flashed for a half second during the Super Bowl, prompting massive complaints, fines, and new legislation. You'd think if anyone under 18 saw a nipple they'd suddenly turn into a psychotic serial killer.

That thing in the US with nudity is really disturbing indeed. I have been working with US partners for nearly 15 years, visiting the place several times a year, and it looks like things are indeed going worse in this regards. Yet at the same time, the tolerance towards the depiction of graphic violence on TV seems larger and larger. So in some people's mind now, it is less traumatic for a youngster to see a person eviscerated on a dissection table like in CSI than glimpsing a nipple in a commercial.
Makes no sense to me ...
On the other side, there are other elements of US society which I would gladly swap with ours.
I guess that knowing each other is the key to keeping the best of the two worlds !
Keep up the good work, your art is technically perfect, and at the same time both sexy and witty. Hats off !

During the broadcast of Super Bowl XXXVIII, where Janet Jackson showed her breast for that instant, there was some sort of CSI commercial that showed a guy carrying a severed human leg, and also showed a decapitated human head as a veiled fellatio joke was said, and all THAT was fine!
Your comment reminded me of the old double standard that killing someone in real life is illegal, but showing it on TV is fine... On the other hand, having sex with someone in real life is legal, but showing it on TV is not.
I was also reminded of a time when they tried to ban adult bookstores from being anywhere near a church... Why? So that people could feel safe as they went to kneel before a sculpture of a half naked man strapped to a wooden apparatus through an unusual series of body piercings while they pretend to drink blood and eat flesh in bizarre cannibalistic rituals and not have to worry about seeing pictures of attractive women with their breasts exposed.
Life is all about perception.

The good thing is with the internet, we are discovering the like-mindedness of those who share our fetishes... so they can be discussed, understood, and eventually accepted by at least SOME of the mainstream.
One of the things I've tried to do is to find the common thread of many of the peril based and restraint based fetishes to bring them together under a common umbrella of "Sensual Distress". And while every fetish I portray may not be everyone's cup of tea, I hope that they can at least be appreciated to some extent by others.

Well said. Maybe the operative word here is 'sensual'. No matter what the content, there is an undercurrent of erotic sensuality. But this is a 'felt' sense which not everyone is equipped to relate to in a positive and loving way, thus leaving the material open to alternative, fear based, and much less wholesome interpretations.

One design note. I would have put a hanging point for her shoulders out at the upper end. That is going to be very painful on her shoulder joints.......and quite quickly too.

Thanks! And I love that you can see the necessary hanging points AND their painful implications. That's awesome! One of the reasons I enjoy the illustration side of the fetish is that we artists don't always have to be confined to things like "gravity" and "physics"... as some of my girls boobs will prove!
And "building" something only requires me to sharpen my pencil.
