Naoya is a boisterous young man with a lot of heart. He is known to give his all at everything he attempts, and there is nothing that bores him more than idleness. His passion is said to be contagious, as he is always ready and willing to support those he cares for. He displays an inclination to take risks, which may be favorable or disadvantageous, depending on the circumstances. Due to a combination of impulsiveness and compassion, he is no stranger to conflict, and is known to stand up for others, particularly those he deems unable to stand up for themselves. If one is willing to look past or even embrace Naoya's overzealousness, they may come to make a worthy friend and ally.

Sensitivity is also a double-edged sword. Despite his reluctance to admit it, those closest to him will know that Naoya is someone who cares, and cares very deeply. His mother was out partying much of her free time, leaving Naoya home alone from a fairly young age to care for his little brother. While well-behaved at home, he began acting out at school, and because he wasn't properly punished for it, his troublemaking only escalated. In junior high, a concerned teacher extended an offer for Naoya to join the school's volleyball team, which he ended up enjoying more than he expected. The threat of being pulled from the team if he didn't get his act together was enough to help him turn himself around, over some time. Now, in his third year of high school, Naoya is much more well-adjusted, and strives to be a positive influence on both his younger brother and his underclassmen.

Naoya was brought up in a single-parent household, and for some time, it was just him and his mother, against the world. Their relationship was at its strongest when he was younger, as he trusted his mother unconditionally – he had no reason to think anything of it when she ended up pregnant with another child when Naoya was only six. Though, as he grew older and wiser, he began to recognize patterns of immaturity on his mother's part. Perhaps it wasn't healthy that she worked such long hours, then spent much of her time off the clock going out with friends, leaving 9-year-old Naoya home alone to watch over his baby brother for hours at a time. Naoya learned to mature early on, for Seijiro's sake.

However, it was around this time that Naoya became resentful of his mother's actions. Though he never doubted her love for them, "her best" as it was would never suffice, but at this point in his life, he wouldn't dare call her out on it. Ever the kind and well-behaved older brother at home, Naoya began acting out at school. This came as a surprise to his mother, who never knew what to do with him, viewing it as out-of-character for her son. As a result, Naoya's antics often went unpunished at home, while at school, his troublemaking only escalated. First it was picking fights with other students, then mouthing off to teachers— by junior high, it was assumed he had been vandalizing school property, though it could never be proven. He had already made a name for himself upon entering junior high, and was typically avoided.

Naoya's new homeroom teacher saw through his attention seeking and expressed concern, even offering him a place on their school's volleyball team the very next year. Naoya never anticipated enjoying the sport as much as he did. Something about being more physically active allowed him to vent out his frustrations and pent-up competitiveness in a constructive way. Those closest to him came to realize that this was just what he needed at the time, but the move to add him to the team wasn't without its ulterior motives. In order to continue playing for the volleyball team, Naoya had to clean up his act; he had to achieve better grades, quit stirring up trouble at school, and overall better himself. It certainly wasn’t an overnight change, but this was effective. Now, Naoya had something to lose if he carried on with his mischief.

Currently, Naoya is in his third year of high school, and in a better place than he has ever been. Though bits of his attitude from that dark period of his life still linger, he has, for the most part, straightened himself out. Because his mother continues to make some poor choices, he still feels a strong sense of responsibility for his younger brother, but no longer lets it drag him down. As a third year and veteran of the Karasuno volleyball team, though occasionally misguided, he strives to be a positive influence for his underclassmen as well!
