Story

They were just exploring, today, but it was their first full day out on the trail and they didn't want to lose the little Sheltie cross half way in. Not when they were likely to run into more issues, the most notable at the moment being Roo had the map, which was a problem Chess didn't want to look at too closely right now. He couldn't find his way out of a paper bag with a sat nav.

So they meandered away from the City, greeting other riders as everyone seemed to find a friend to ride with. There were exceptions, of course. A pretty woman sitting regally on a bay horse which was wearing no bridle seemed content to ride alone; her eyes narrowing at some of the riders as they jostled around.

Roo had to keep Spawn to the edge of the group as everyone headed out - the mare had been more than a little annoyed at being corralled with other horses for the night, and her tail was swishing angrily, her ears pinned back every time a horse approached her bubble.

Chess found herself in the midst of a pack of horses with a motley assortment of riders and even an eagle right when a dark little mare with a pale mane and tail and a calculating look in her eyes exploded. Not literally. She threw her weight into another horse and the small pack broke up amid a cloud of dust. Mossy - surprised but not really scared - leapt into the air, her hooves striking out but thankfully clear of any horses and Chess wasn't sure if she should be worried or amused as the plucky Arabian carried them clear of the scrimmage.

The dust settled, and Chess caught a glimpse of the mare in the middle of it cantering away, tailed by a black horse that was almost prancing with glee. Mossy abruptly stopped and Chess focused again as she realised nearly everyone had split ways now, and they had caught up with Roo. Peanut was sitting happily at a safe distance from Spawn and Roo was sitting quietly in an effort to appease the cross mare.

Mossy took a little coaxing, but ultimately put up no protest when Chess set Peanut on her croup so the little dog could save her energy. Wordlessly, they turned the horses for the trail.

There was no set path and though Chess wasn't entirely sure Roo was actually reading the map, they seemed to be heading in aroundabout the right direction. The views all around were amazing, but it was soon a strain on the eyes to keep watching great expanses of burning red sand and cracked earth, so they took to periods of cloud spotting.

By the time they'd found a potato shaped like a rabbit, a bowl of soup, a handheld drill, a goat, an upside down tree and a rolled up centipede (not a snail) between them, they'd long lost the rest of the group and Peanut had been set on the ground so she could stretch her legs and dart through the sparse bracken.

Roo shook his head, letting Spawn jog on as he muttered to himself about rolled up centipedes. Chess bit her lip so she wouldn't laugh - no, she'd never seen one either, but since it had been Roo who declared a particularly lumpy cloud to be a potato that only looked like a rabbit, Chess felt within her rights to call hers a centipede. She turned her eyes to the sky again, this time finding an obscure shape with no effort at all.

She felt Mossy stop beneath her, her warm breaths filling the silence and Chess found herself smiling at the curious crescent shaped cloud. A moon during the day. She dug her phone from a saddlebag and took a picture before hiding it away again and looking for Roo.

Spawn had jogged away - keen to move - and they were already cresting a sandy ridge ahead.

The blonde clicked her tongue and let the reins slide through her fingers before whislting to Peanut. Mossy tossed her head and did a half rear as she skipped into a canter, stretching out to catch up. A tricolour blur raced past them.

Chess laughed as they curled around Spawn, trying not to get within range - though the mare's tail swished again and a very disgruntled expression settled on her face. Chess turned her eyes to the sky again, even as they sailed past Roo and started down the ridge. What was lost, really? They didn't feel lost.

Story kinda sucked XD but it's something...

The incident with the horses mentioned was my take on this:
by *life-d-sign and *abosz007
And there is a mention of a bay horse with no bridle and his rider. That would be All Star and Evy who belong to *Littlehorselover

So...this was so much fun!!

I did the sketch thinking I'd do the whole thing myself, and there were originally 3 horses and riders, but *MissDudette has decided not to continue with the trail, so I hid her layers . During the long process of turning a really shoddy sketch about three inches long on paper into an actual lineart, Nev contacted me and we decided - rather than both of us hurriedly trying to draw two horses, a background and everything - we'd split the task. So I finished all the lines and Nev took the file to colour in her horse and rider and paint the amazing background, while I was left to get Chess, Mossy and Peanut done I just put in the spaz hoofprints and shadows at the end.

So it was a fairly even split and I really like how it came out, even if there are the usual niggly things that I can never seem to prevent myself doing

Spawn is notoriously grouchy - bless her - and I'm thinking she's not too happy with Mossy cantering up behind her XD. By the way - they're not trying to sprain their necks, or gurgle rum at the back of their throats, they're cloud spotting Yep.

No refs for my part, though I believe photos of sand dunes were used by Nev to do the background

Oh, I didn't colour in Spawn, the roan. She was coloured by *LeavingNeverland as it was a collab.

But she does do them so well!
