So...I sketched this very loosely in pencil on a piece of scrap paper at work. Then I did sloppy lines in biro. It was around a 20 minute jobby. I've fixed up a couple of problems in PS since scanning it in, but it does still have anatomy issues. They're ones I can live with, though, so its staying as it is. Due to being done in a work break, I had no references so I was also drawing the saddle from memory - it may not be entirely accurate but I'm fairly confident its okay. Recogniseable at the least, haha.

I adore Vacancy's design, too, and I'm glad I've found spare minutes to doodle him more recently.

As for specifics - its a traditional english near side side saddle with a suede seat and brass stirrup. There is a balance strap secured over the girth on this side (its purpose is really only seen viewing from the opposite side to the saddle). Chess is carrying his usual bridle - an english grackle/figure 8. This is a brass loose ring with a happy mouth covered bit piece. The concept behind this is that she's allowing Vacancy to move at liberty to adjust himself to the feel and weight distribution of the saddle, before she puts on the bridle to start giving aids or introducing the weight of a rider.

Many horses will comfortably learn to carry a rider aside in this way, and some may pick it up really fast, but they do have to learn; its not a case of just strapping on the saddle, hopping on and cantering away.
