Description My first Hoffman Challenge quilt (2008). The lovely peacock fabric was the challenge material. Also my first hand-pieced and hand-quilted work.

The vase is stuffed to make it more 3-D.
The blocks in the background are a traditional design called "Storm at Sea," and the centers are "fussy cut" so they all are identical.
The cherry blossoms are made with a cool little tool called a Yo-Yo maker (technically, the yo-yos are round, but they also make flower and heart shapes) and there are 53 of them.

A tanka is a form of Japanese poetry, somewhat like a haiku, but longer, with 5-7-5-7-7 syllables.
Here is the tanka that I wrote for this quilt (it's on the "paper" lying on the "windowsill" at the bottom of the quilt):
Outside my window
Pale blossoms dance, wild and free
On sea-scented winds.
Do my captive blossoms yearn
For such perilous freedom?

This one's very nice. Strong in matching colour and emotion with the Haiku theme.
