Description I got a bunch of nibs and some ink and started in on practicing inking using them, since I can't get a line thin enough or dynamic enough with technical pens or digital. This is put into the Traditional gallery despite me toning it in ComicWorks because the purpose of the pic was to practice inking traditionally.

Yeah, yeah, it's the same as the pencil Sesshoumaru you've all seen in my gallery before - I didn't want to waste time working up some new pencils because that'd take me all frickin' night long.

The fine details that define his fur are wonderful

You know, I've felt this same problem too, recently, and was searching for a calligraphy pen in my local art store to try and get pretty, skinny lines. I ended up just opting to get a 005 (.2mm) Micron Sakura Pigma liner, because the "Artist Pen" I found was a bit steep in price, and I wasn't to sure on exactly what I'd have to do to use it (Couldn't tell if it came with ink or not, if they sold inks or just Nibs, etc, etc).

Where did you find your Calligraphy pen, if I may ask? A normal store like Walmart/Target, or an art speciality place?
You seem to have found the use of it worth it, which I'm glad to hear. You've renewed my desire to try out Pens with Nibs; I was suprised there didn't seem to be more selection available specifically for artist, when I looked!

And the mysterious G-Pen makes an appearance again... if you find a place that has these, I'd love to hear about it ^_^ Since ever Japanese Mangaka and their assistant (heh) seems to mention these things, I get the feeling it might be a key to getting that "authentic manga look".

Ahh well, here's a -Cheers!- To your eventual success, since you mention needing to use this method for future projects! (Which may have already come, since this is an older deviation, eh...)

I got the pen holder and the nibs I used on this pic at Asel's Art Supply, an art store nearby (it's a chain, but I don't know how big it is). I ende dup getting ones that are used more by cartographers than artists - I don't know much about what other pens artists in this country use.

I got my Japanese pen holders and nibs from [link] They're decently priced and pretty quick at shipping. I like them better than the American nibs because they're longer and you can dip them into teh ink without getting ink all up the holder. They also feel a bit better on the manga paper I use (ordered from the same place), but I can't tell if that's because they really feel that way or because of the power of suggestion.

What kind of pen do u use for inking this pic??
I really don't know how some good artists in DA inking their pic with digital pen,
it's very very hard for me and yes, I've never get a satisfy thin line.

For this pic, I like the neat and clean lineart you've done without losing any details on his armour.
And the fur is very well done. Nice work with tone too, but quality of the tone drops in progress of resize.
Well, I usually ignore a small dot tone when I work on some pic I'll have to resize it later.
How many resolution you've used with this pic?

BTW, +Have you ever tried G-Pen or Maru-Pen before?

Nice work! Keep practising!
G

Thank you!

What kind of pen do u use for inking this pic??

I've forgotten the brand name - it's not Speedball, but one of the other common pen brands here. They're really made for drawing maps and calligraphy, not comic inking, because there's not much of that around. I inked this guy digitally in ComicWorks, and finally found a pen setting that helped me to the really thin bits, but I don't like the feel of digital inking for a lot of the pic - it's great for flowing lines and some curves, but for the straight lines and corners and gentle curves, I prefer the organic feel of inking with a pen.

Yeah, I know the tone quality compresses, but I'm practicing for print-quality stuff, so I tone at that resolution and just suffer with the compression artifacts. XD This was done at 300ppi - I think that I really ned to be working at 600ppi, for the projects I'll be doing in the future.

BTW, +Have you ever tried G-Pen or Maru-Pen before?

Nope. I want to, but I can't get them in stores here, so I'm going to have to order them from somewhere.

Very nice! I have that same problem... my line quality is really terrible. Was it hard working with the pens?

telophase In reply to Spiffiness [2005-07-14 05:02:17 +0000 UTC]

Yes and no. I did better than I have done in the past, but I did manage to spatter and also accidentally drag my hand through some wet ink, so I ahd a few black blobs on it. XD I cleaned it up in Photoshop, and also cleaned up the ends of the hair - the part of his hair nearest his head looked pretty good, but I overdid the lines on the ends and had to erase a lot of them to keep the wispy windblown look.

Ah, what would we do without Photoshop, eh? XD So do you think it was worth it?

telophase In reply to Spiffiness [2005-07-14 15:53:43 +0000 UTC]

Yeah. I need to do a lot more in the immediate future, to get more practice. I've got a couple of projects coming up where I need to start out good, instead of using them to practice on.
