Description “Now join your hands, and with your hands your hearts.” ~William Shakespeare

Again with the Shakespeare quotes, apologies for the cliches. Needed to do some more Rian/Farael goo, because I obviously haven't been meeting my weekly quota. Actually, I've been sitting on this drawing for a while, I only just now got around to coloring it. I did it around the same time as this one: because I'm a huge, huge sucker for hands/head-on-chest poses. This one's all about the hands, because I love them.

Ink on paper, colored and textured in PS. Characters are, of course, Rian and Farael.

there is just such clear peace in this one that its just soothing to look at. you can REALLY feel the love here, and even though her breasts are partially exposed you really just get the intimate feeling, rather then anything sexual.

your couple pics make me swoon so hard ;=;

Wow!! That's such a sweet thing to say... I was a little torn on whether to keep the top of her robe that open, but I figured it was necessary to convey that hands-on-skin warmth that I was thinking about when I drew this (I'm a HUGE sucker for hands/head-on-chest poses, in case you hadn't noticed ). I'm glad it doesn't come across as overly copping-a-feel. X) While there's nothing wrong with that, it's not what I was going for here, and I'm quite pleased that it reads how I imagined. Thank you again!!

I've noticed, and i'll be frank, Im the same its because you really do get that feeling when you look at this, that whole importance of touch and the feeling of another so close to you.

XD most definitely not copping a feel, believe me you got that across very well <3

Your very welcome my dear

Aw, thank you! Yes, I love drawing them. Originally when I was doing this whole storyline they were going to hook up but not exactly fall in love with each other, but you know how characters insist on taking things in their own direction sometimes.

The hands are pretty~ And I really adore the expression you put on her face. It's so peaceful and relaxed. The texture you used for her clothes works really nice with the whole picture as well. Great piece.

Thank you! The hands were my favorite part. As you may have guessed (if you've read any other comments where I mention it) my favorite body parts are faces and hands, and so this one I was really doing all about the hands. I just had this idea to do a picture of her one hand holding his against her chest and the other with his fingers on the little hollow of her throat. The whole thought I had was really unusually sensory and less of an image than a feeling with fingertips on warm skin, so I decided to run with that. I hope I did okay in conveying that! And that I don't sound too bizarre for having a thought process like that.

Makio-Kuta In reply to temiel [2009-10-22 02:40:16 +0000 UTC]

lol No, not bizarre at all. It's neat to here where people's inspiration comes from. I love it when it's something so small or simple---like a feeling, a fleeting image, a smell, a sound--and it grows into a picture, poem, story, song--

And, the way it looks like he is very gingerly placing his finger on that spot of her throat was one of my favourite parts of the picture. n.n

Ooh, I'm so glad, it was probably my favorite part to draw. I love fingertips on little sensitive areas.

You know... i can't say that the colors are fantastic, or that the linework is super clean. But there is such strong emotion coming from this piece. It leaves you caught in the moment...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

temiel In reply to JubeiSpiegel [2009-10-22 00:48:05 +0000 UTC]

The linework criticism makes sense, because I did it in ink on paper, so there's always some tooth there. And yet I really like coloring digitally... I considered lowering the opacity to let some paper texture show through and lessen the effect of the "dirty" lines, but I ended up not doing it because it just didn't look that good. But you don't like the colors? I thought they were kinda nice, but I can always be wrong. Any suggestions?

I'm really glad you liked it overall though. I was definitely going for a specific-moment kind of feel. Thanks a lot for the fave... especially if it was given because the pic won you over in spite of itself!

JubeiSpiegel In reply to temiel [2009-10-22 00:58:43 +0000 UTC]

I actually didn't dislike the colors, what i ment to say was that the colors are more subtle. Not really a main focus. I'll admit that it works better with the textures though.

temiel In reply to JubeiSpiegel [2009-10-22 01:05:13 +0000 UTC]

Ah, okay I'd agree that it does. I just wanted to keep that dark(ish) purple background, and a lot of the colors on the figures are so light that they just disappear once you lower the opacity some. Not my best-planned endeavor, certainly. But whatcha gon' do, right, besides think about it more next time?

Her kimono is rockign! This is my favourite picture of them, I think, partly because I think it is the best picture, and also because of the colours. I just love the kimono print.

Thanks! ~MapleRose-stock has a whole pack of 'em, and both the patterns are from there. I had *talaith send me a huge folder of origami papers last night so if I need something like that in the future there won't be any copyright issues with the stock. I've always been wary of using other people's textures and brushes for that reason, just because I'm afraid they're going to suddenly rescind the royalty-free use and make me change something Realistically, I don't imagine that anyone would, but still. I like knowing that everything I've used is without any crediting baggage so I don't mess someone up by accident.

I'm glad it's your favorite thus far. I was really quite pleased with this, for something that I literally did all the ink/color work on in the span of one night. It feels very warm to me.

It's lovely to deel close to your pics like that.

And yeah, I worry about copyright of materials and brushes too - so it isn't just you.

Cool! Good to know I'm not just incredibly neurotic Nobody else I know seems to have problems with using other people's stock, so I thought I might've been the odd one out there...

Its probably irrational to be worried, but there you go, we both are! I especially worry about the patterns and brushes for any commissions I might have. Somehow money being involved seems to make things more serious.

Haha, more fluff! Oh, they look very lovely here. And I agree with chen that it looks like a morning picture. I can even kinda see the bright morning sun glint on Rian's face. lol Lovely coloring. I really like how you color the lines. They look wonderful and really add something, you know? I dunno, it just looks more.. hmm.. colorful.. x_x lol Anyway, beautiful work on this one. I especially adore the white strand around the obi. (Obi, in this case, yeah? lol)

temiel In reply to CrystalCurtisArt [2009-10-21 14:49:29 +0000 UTC]

Aw, thank you. Yes, I do enjoy my fluff! It's terrible!
Yeah, I'm not sure why I assumed it was night... the lighting really does look morning-y. Maybe I started with the idea that it was nighttime and then during the coloring process the sun came up?
I'm glad you like the colored lines; it depends on the piece but lately I've been preferring them to the black ink line. Makes everything seem a little lighter and maybe more dimensional. I was really surprised by how well the white string around the obi came out, I was thinking it'd either look really cool or really stupid without further rendering. Guess I lucked out.

Oh how lovely and tender
It looks like a "good morning" picture :3 and Rian's outfit is so cute and I love the patterns
Their expressions are so relaxed and both look so pretty

do you have any tips for drawing expressions? I really admire your expression drawing skills

Great picture as always and it's so sweet yet again

temiel In reply to Chenria [2009-10-21 13:31:25 +0000 UTC]

Hehe! It kinda does... I like that interpretation, I always pictured this as a nighttime picture, but yours is better!

As to expressions, I started doing facial expressions better by looking at myself in a mirror doing the expression I wanted, but it might be easier to take a picture. What was even more helpful, though, was this book: [link] When I was taking a character design class at school, my teacher had photocopies of pages of this book, which actually gives diagrams of each expression and notes on how the musculature moves, along with "distinctive" traits of each expression. The diagrams themselves are simple, but it goes into a lot of detail with the description in a way that sticks with you. I really recommend that book. In fact, I think I might buy it for myself, because I lost that photocopy a while ago

As with anything, of course, practice helps, but I think that's a pretty good starting place. Don't worry if your first drawings where you're going for a really solid expression look comically overexaggerated, it takes a while to learn how to modify them so they're still recognizeable but fit your style.

You may want to take a look at several different artists' versions of this meme: [link] (I just put mine because I can find it easily; if you want to do the blank one, it's linked in the artist's comments) It's kind of floating around and it's a great way to see different ways of conveying common expressions. You may want to fill it out yourself, if you want to get some good practice in.

Hope that helps! I'm so flattered you asked for advice, I love doing facial expressions and I feel like I'm pretty good at them, so that means a lot.

Oh... you reminded me that I once bought a book about how to draw comics and it had a really great chapter about emotions and facial expression and the best thing: I took it with me!! XD so I looked for it in my comic bookshelf and found it [link] I really should try to work on some expressions and the idea with that meme is great, too :3 thank you ^^ I will try to practise.
