Description Here's something you don't see from me often, space art! Although I don't really mention it, I love space. It's so mysterious and alluring to me, and the idea of extrasolar planets really intrigues me. (extrasolar means things outside of our own solar system)

What I like about space art in general, is that anything is possible. What I have painted here could very well exist somewhere in a galaxy far, far away.

I used various reference for this, looking at the art of a variety of sci-fi artists. However, I didn't go planet-happy like some of them do. I believe there is beauty in simplicity.

This is the planet tutorial I used: [link] However, I did a few tricks of my own to get this Earth-like planet, rather than a random rocky one.

Enjoy!

Hm . . . that bit of geography visible looks not unlike England and Scandinavia. maybe altered somewhat, but certainly a resemblance.

Please do more!

The land masses were created randomly, hehe. It was just some controlled-scribbles I did on the circle, then "sphereized" it!

And I shall! Thanks!

How did you manage to create a sense of luminance? I'm trying to figure that out right now.

Nice!

I like how the foreground isn't just a set of generic rocks thrown in there to provide a reference; it looks very nice, and has features of its own. The blur at the horizon and the light glow is lovely as well.

I believe that another Earth is very possible. Not *exactly*, but close. Climate, life and everything. If the same climate and demands are present, life should evolve in a similar matter. Not perfectly the same, but close. At least that's my hypothesis.

Oh! It kind of does doesn't it? o.O The composition is pretty similar, except the comets are replaced by stars. (which look like the "seven sisters" specifically, to me)

Very realistic, its my new background too xD
How do you imagine the ratios, proportions, and landscapes for this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Temiree In reply to ZaranR [2009-02-25 03:58:02 +0000 UTC]

Here is a better background with the aspect ratio fixed. Otherwise the planet comes out a little bit oval. [link]

And what do you mean by that? The specs of the planet?

To me...I'd say it's quite larger than Earth. Maybe close to two Earth masses. For example, that island you see in the top left of the planet would be the same size as Australia roughly. Both moons are roughly the same size as ours, except darker and icy. The landscapes are basically the same as our planet, except with a higher chance of more extreme places since it's larger.

I believe in life elsewhere. I don't think of all the billions of galaxies and billions of stars between them, we are some anomaly.

ShiaShnaky In reply to Temiree [2009-02-25 02:08:06 +0000 UTC]

i'm not sure about more intelligent life, but the chance of somewhere capable of supporting life is extremely rare, , let alone actually having life on it.. but then again, it does go on forever

Temiree In reply to ShiaShnaky [2009-03-14 08:49:50 +0000 UTC]

Well considering we lack much knowledge about other solar systems, we don't really know how often habitable planets come along. One scientist estimate one per solar system, but I don't know what the basis of it is. NASA just launched this new probe (Keifer I think) to search for Earth-like planets specifically. They're going to be watching 100,000 sun-like stars for the next four years and wait for signs of blinking as a planet goes by. We should have some results come in within 3 months.

ShiaShnaky In reply to Temiree [2009-03-14 15:56:51 +0000 UTC]

oh wow lol xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Temiree In reply to ShiaShnaky [2009-03-14 22:03:20 +0000 UTC]

Yep! All they've found so far are gas giants many times the mass of Jupiter, since the blinking can be so faint. It'll be interesting what we find with this.
