Description The Common Velociraptor is a small carnivore from Late Cretaceous Mongolia. These raptors are nocturnal predators of mainly small mammals, but will occasionally cooperate to bring down larger prey. Males and females mate for life, and both parents will tend the nest. While not normally aggressive, they are very protective of their eggs and young, and will take on much larger animals like Protoceratops if they see them as a threat to their offspring.

--------------------

I now know the secret reason why naked raptors are still so popular: Feathers are so hard to draw! I think I will take a break from raptors for a while.

Colouration based on the Lammergeier and the Cheetah.

Skeletal restoration by the amazing Scott Hartman ([link] ) used as reference.

It looks great, but what really bugs me is that it seems like there are only 3 toes (including the hallux) on each foot.

Yeah, you're right. This is an older drawing based on a Scott Hartman skeletal.

Very nice coloration and very good feathering.

The description made me cheer up a bit, Protoceratops going after Velociraptor off-springs doesn't seem far fetched at all.

looks a bit like a coyote mixed with a roadrunner nice concept I always envisioned velociraptor occupying a niche similar to a coyote seeing as how it was a desert dweller.

A lammergeier or bearded vulture.

Awesome Picture !
Velociraptors hands is more like birds ?

TheMorlock In reply to grisador [2013-03-22 19:32:42 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

The hand is a little off. The feathers should actually attach to the middle finger, and that isn't very clear in this picture.
