I always did like that story by Poe. I did a presentation on it. (It impressed the girl in class I had a crush on at the time, AND I got an A.)

Maybe he knew Fortunato for a long time and finally got so fed up with him. They might've been roommates at one point and Fortunato kept leaving the icebox open or never emptied the chamber pot.

The "thousand injuries" he bore were how many times Fortunato left the toilet seat up. Dang, Montresor must have OCD or something.
