Description "Glorfindel and Asfaloth"
Made April 17th, 2008
Pencil, Watercolor pencils, blue and black pens.

"The light faded, and the leaves on the bushes rustled softly. Clearer and nearer now the bells jingled, and clippety-clip came from the quick trotting feet. Suddenly into view below came a white horse, gleaming in the shadows, running swiftly. In the dusk its headstall flickered and flashed, as if it were studded with gems like living stars. The rider's cloak streamed behind him, and his hood was thrown back; his golden hair flowed shimmering in the wind of his speed. To Frodo it appeared that a white light was shining through the form and raiment of the rider, as if through a thin veil."

~ Chapter 12 "Flight to the Ford": of the "The Fellowship of the Ring" by J.R.R. Tolkien

Well, a friend and I are beginning to have these little drawing competitions as a way to motivate our otherwise lazy selves (I mean myself for the most part) to turn out more drawings and have some fun in the process. So, we decided that since she is better doing portraits than I am, we're going to switch each week, every other week we have to draw a portrait of someone, and the next week we draw a picture where you have to make everything up from your head and draw it on paper. (Which is what I do mostly). And we agreed that we could have models for pictures too, yadda, yadda. Anyway, so since the last week was her choice (that was the "Watercolor portrait") I got to choose this week, and I chose to do Glorfindel.

Tell me whether you like it or not. I'm actually pretty happy with how it turned out, though I liked the horse better before I colored it. I thought that the perfect kind of horse for Asfaloth would be a Lipizzaner horse (utterly beautiful horses by the way) I did use a picture reference to draw it, and Glorfindel's legs were very hasseling, because I've never been good at making people look like they are actually sitting on the horse. So, this is the picture I used: [link]

Enjoy!

Cor! I love Glorfindel and Asfaloth. This art is really very beautiful and you've done them justice, in my opinion. I think you've captured their ethereal glow, and they both look very majestic. Well done!

Awww! Why thank you! ^^ I can't honestly say I'm very pleased with this one, I think I've grown a bit better with more practice with watercolors. I should redo this though. I really liked the image in the book of Glorfindel and Asfaloth.

Thank you! I'm glad you like it! It's a bit old, and I have problem with the anatomay, but it was an earlier watercolor drawing.

Wow, beautiful colors! Love the horse...(wow, I really need to reread LoTR... I hardly remember details anymore).
The only thing I would say for critique would be that Glorfindel's legs seem a bit short for him, but that may be because of the pose. *shrugs*
Anyways, great job!!

Thank you! His legs were really ridiculous to draw. Hehehe. I can't draw people riding horses, so you're probably right.

Heh, I really dislike drawing legs in weird poses. :3 So hard...

I love your colors! They're ethereal yet intense. I really need to read LotR again, it's been years... Anyway, you want advanced critique... the background looks kinda static, especially compared to Glorfindel's and the horse's windblown hair. Maybe the trees should react to that wind too.

Thanks! It's such a great book. *sigh* Gotta love it. Wow, I actually never noticed/thought about that before. Thanks for pointing that out! I'll be sure to pay more attention to that in the future. Thank you!

aw, cool! the water color pencils look great!
and i'm so sorry for not having commented on your past deviations! I see them, and they're beautiful, but I'm really busy! D: I'll do my best to keep up the commenting ^^
This is really a colorful and pretty picture I like the idea you have with your friend to keep yourselves motivated XD Doing things with another person is always more fun
As for the technicalities of the picture, there are a few things I'll pick on. First, the man's head is too small for the horse (and his body). A human's head next to a horse's isn't too much smaller. More than half, but less than exactly the same size.
Also, the horse's legs fold in too much. His back legs should be farther back so that the horse can...er.. stand up. Haha
I sympathize with you, though, on drawing both humans and horses together! Especially man on horseback! Somehow it makes it so much harder X3 YOu did a lovely job, considering!
Bravo!

Thank you very much! Actually, I wanted Asfaloth to be a walloping big horse, and seeing as how there are many different kinds of horses, there's not really an "official" size comparison between horses and people. Like draft horses for example, those are BEASTLY sized animals! But I know what you mean, but Lipizzaners are amazing horses that are decended from the horses knights used in Medieval Europe, so they are big like that. They are also show horses and are taught to do a lot of things with their feet (like dancing) and their legs do go up that high (I did use a photo for reference because I knew my failings when it comes to drawing certain kinds of horses ) Hackney horses are a great example of horses with an unusual trot. They kick their legs up REALLY high. Yeah, and Glorfindel's head probably is a bit too small. Thank you for the long comment! God bless!

oh...draft horse. that makes much more sense ^^ (but if i REALLY want to be picky, i could say his bone structure is still too thin. he needs to be more bulky as a draft horse ) and as for trot, you may be no horse expert, but trotting is like walking for humans, and his position looks more like standing or mid canter...which still is a little awkward. i'm sure you'll get horses down more and more, though, with everytime you practice them ^^ just like humans :3
and you're welcome for the long comment! (they're both a curse and a blessing for me XD i just can't write short comments << )

Oh, well I wasn't saying Asfaloth was a draft horse, I was just giving an example. He's supposed to be a Lipizzaner horse. He is walking/trotting/moving-in-some-way.

Cool! Glorfindel was always one of my fav lotr characters! I especially like how you used that bright blue. And I like all the delicious little details like the folds int he fabric, the texture in Asfaloth's mane, and all the fun trappings!

He looks a tad top-heavy, or torso-long...

nice job

Theophilia In reply to Professor-Kirby [2008-04-18 20:34:52 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much! Yeah, his torso probably is a bit long, for some reason I tend to make long-torsoed people or something. If you look back at some of my other pictures you can probably see it there too. Yes, the tack was a lot of fun to draw. That was one of my favorite parts. The horse took the longest to do.
