Description "Across so wide a Sea..."
February 8th, 2010
Watercolors, pencil, masking fluid

I did this for a friend of mine. She asked me to make a Galadriel for her, so here it is. I'm not really very happy about it. I don't know, I mean, I guess it's okay. I suppose I'm just not satisfied with it for some reason. Her dress was supposed to be white, but, because I always do blue as the shadows to make it look more cold and pure, it kind of got gunked up, so I just made it blue. *shrugs* Galadriel looks good in blue too I guess. I used a lot of masking fluid with this one, particularly in the pearls and the border. It's a bit too big for my scanner (as in, it cute her off at the knees) so I took a picture, and thus, the less-than-good quality. Enjoy anyway.

"I sang of leaves, of leaves of gold,
and leaves of gold there grew:
Of wind I sang, a wind there came
and in the branches blew.

Beyond the Sun, beyond the Moon,
the foam was on the Sea,
And by the strand of Ilmarin
there grew a golden Tree.

Beneath the stars of Ever-eve
in Eldamar it shone,
In Eldamar beside the walls
of Elven Tirion.

There long the golden leaves have grown
upon the branching years,
While here beyond the Sundering Seas
now fall the Elven-tears.

O Lorien! The Winter comes,
the bare and leafless Day;
The leaves are falling in the stream,
the River flows away.

O Lorien! Too long I have dwelt
upon this Hither Shore
And in a fading crown have twined
the golden elanor.

But if of ships I now should sing,
what ship would come to me,
What ship would bear me ever back
across so wide a Sea?"

Closer, scanned, more detaily version: [link]

EDIT: Okay, I tried, I really did. : There is a huge line right through it, because I scanned it into two parts and had only Paint to edit it together with. I wish I had Photoshop, but I don't. So please excuse that horrible line right through the middle....

EDIT (Take Two!!): ~Sirielle was very kind to offer to fix my picture. So thank you ~Sirielle for editing my picture, and also for giving me a tutorial on editing pictures in the future!

I can see here the same charming pose and of course, the long gold hair, also waving in the wind. Yeah, I think that Galadriel was so beautiful, that she should be like Venus, not necessarily naked You're welcome

Theophilia In reply to Einaari [2010-02-26 21:42:16 +0000 UTC]

Awwww....

Yeah, I can see what you mean by that, I think some of Galadriel's "elven charm" would be lost if she were portrayed naked. It just doesn't have a very ethereal feel about it.

Oh, I like that
Especially the patterns and the shape of the border, and her clothes, and of course the style There still the mood I like on this picture

Just asking out of interest: in my LotR, the poem is written in 14 lines, which means that each two of the lines in what you give us is one line in the original. As a calligraphy-maniac, I must ask, where did you get this idea of dividing the poem? (That may give a quite interesting layout, and the original version, when hand-written, looks just like a block of text...)

Awww, thanks so very much!!! I was trying to add a little bit of fairy-ness into Galdriel's pose. Kind of combining how I usually imagine Tolkien's elves (tall, strong, beautiful, wise, etc) with some of the more traditonal views of elves and fairies, with a light, translucent quality to them. I think the mythic fits Galadriel very well.

Alqualaure In reply to Theophilia [2010-03-06 00:37:19 +0000 UTC]

"Tall, strong, beautiful, wise + "with light, translucent quality"... I know it sound very Mary-Sue-ish, but that's exactly how I imagine Elves as well Moreover, Galadriel was old, and the older the Elf gets, fea is taking more over hroa, so she would be even lighter, methinks

BTW, it reminds me of Burne-Jones' illustrations to the Kelmscott Chaucer, like that one: [link]

Theophilia In reply to Alqualaure [2010-03-09 15:11:52 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow, the border in that is AMAZIG. O.O That is quite a compliment to even begin such a comparison! Thank you!!!!

Great point! And the light of Aman was probably still in her eyes after all those years. I feel like Sam now, "Mr. Frodo, I would dearly love to see some elves!"

Alqualaure In reply to Theophilia [2010-03-10 22:01:15 +0000 UTC]

Ok... would you like to see any Elves? even slightly angry Maedhros or any of his younger brothers (Celegorm?) just before the Second Kinslaying? (I'm still in fencing mood... And I think my answer would be "yessssss")

I think the light was even more visible after so many years, as it was not (kind of) 'dimmed' by hroa. I'm not sure how to explain it, but wasn't it something like an elf gets more and more spirit-like as they spend time in Middle-earth? I remember someone (a well-respected Tolkien fan) complaining about all those fanfiction with Maglor in our times. He gave arguments that an elf who was that old, even if he was visible to humans, he would appear like a ball of light, because we would see just his fea, as hroa would have 'evaporate' with time. I'm not sure which texts were used as a proof, though.

I still would love to see some elves! Even if they were not very happy ones.
