"The Secret Garden"August 18th, 2011
Watercolors, pencil and pen
I made this for a friend's birthday, and, alas, it looks terrible and muddy.
I'm almost ashamed to put it up here because I really am NOT happy with it. I liked the idea of it, and the sketch was turning out well, but I had to try and finish it quickly so I could give her it... "but haste makes waste" so there you are. Bah. I haven't been feeling super great for the past week or so, so I'm sure that's made me get sloppy as well. In any case, here it is.My idea behind this was that the girl was going into the "Secret Garden" which is really the old ruins of a church, overgrown with roses. But she has the key to enter the Garden. It's more supposed to be an allegory for the soul.
Executed very poorly by yours truly.

It is the curse of all art. If you try to do it quick, you know it would have looked better if you spent more time. Then you sketch something offhand and it looks better than the thing you spent four hours on. >_<

This is lovely. The indisctint surrounds draw the attention to the maiden. It gives the impression that the garden is her spiritual garden, rather than a physical garden.

Actually, you know, now that I remember more of it something like this was in the dream I had last night. Except the girl was all in white, and I think it might have been Galadriel. Last night I had the privilege of watching the Fellowship of the Ring at a huge outdoor theater (same place where I went to that Rachmaninoff concert) with live music being played for the soundtrack. The place was packed with thousands of people, all these LotR fans cheering and clapping and laughing (and I'm sure crying) at the movie. Amazing amazing amazing. Oh Tolkien... There's just nothing like hearing the Lord of the Rings blasted through a whole huge open area... and hearing all the lines echoing. In any case, that's probably what was on my mind.

Yep. Sloppy. Bleh. It looked really detailed in the sketch I also used some crappy watercolors. I should get throw those things out, hey always mess up paintings whenever I use them.
I'm not very imaginiative, so I'm not sure how Photoshop could fix it.

Ah well. I've had my rough experiences with crappy watercolors before. I remember in our "art class" in middle school (it was NOT an art class - lamest thing of all time) we did something with watercolors, and I hated them so much I vowed never to touch watercolors again. And now look at me.
Well, if you added a lot more shading and stuff to the door to make the details pop... or if you had lots of good brushes or filter type thingies (you can tell I'm a pro by my terminology) you might be able to just shape it up and make it neater.

It's more that the crappy watercolors I used ruined the paper too. There's nothing more I can do without killing it. And anyway, I can't work on it anymore since I gave it away.
