Description I originally plan on posting this on Memorial Day...but I was so freakin busy! This is a tribute by a piece by Joe Kubert of Sgt. Rock and his supporting cast. static.comicvine.com/uploads/o…  Sgt. Rock is one of the most unique characters in the DC Universe. With a universe filled with superpowered heroes, here we have a true hero who fights for what is right against tyranny. Again this is also a tribute for all those soldiers who have fought and died.

Man, you must be lucky to have a dad who had a collection of old Sgt. Rock comics. Me personally I didn't get into the character until after his creator, Joe Kubert died. But after reading them he's a total badass and one of my DC characters.

Well it was never complete. I remember I was ten and he came home form work with a huge cardboard box filled with Weird War Tales, Sgt. Rock, Haunted Tank, the Losers and other comics that was about the soldiers. He managed to find as much comics as he could. He even found some limited run comics called OSS that did not sell well because of Vietnam. But it was great reading these comic books and feel like it was a great shame that DC never continued them into the modern era.

That is awesome! While my father did the same thing when his editor (He was a journalist) Brought home all these comics, but unfortunately no war theme ones. Actually believe it or not actually DC tried to bring these characters back for the Modern Age. They tried couple attempts with the creature Commandos www.comicvine.com/creature-com…  www.comicvine.com/frankenstein… The Losers got their own reboot though not connected with the original and were whole new team that was printed by Veritgo www.comicvine.com/the-losers/4… (though in honesty it's not just the same) The Haunted Tank saw new life in a 2008 mini series when the ghost of JEB Stuart met his latest descendant who is actually a black tank commander www.comicvine.com/the-haunted-… (What a twist!) and Sgt. Rock himself saw some new life www.comicvine.com/sgt-rock-the… And even with a modern twist for his grandson took the mantle of "Sgt. Rock" www.comicvine.com/men-of-war/4… . Heck even Enemy Ace, the infamous German WWI pilot of the DCU saw a few comebacks www.comicvine.com/enemy-ace-wa… However most of these had little to no success which is ashame. I guess war comics are not that much of a seller today as they were back then.

I did hear about some of these reboots, most just can never live up to it to the originals. They made the reboot of the Haunted Tank politically correct even though the didn't need too. Gus Gray was one of my favorite character that stuck close to Jeb while the other two wanted to turn him in. They didn't need to do that. Also with the Sgt. Rock Grandson didn't make sense either when he was a Special Forces  because people like them or DC thinks. I think the magic behind the comics were the whole World War II story and some of the ridiculous of the story. But it was still amazing to read and in my opinion way better than Superhero comic.

In all honesty  I haven't read any of the old Haunted Tank, while I do think  the reboot was interesting on how it tackled certain topics, I do understand where your coming from with a Black tanker like Gus was  close to the General which kind of contradicts the whole storyline of that mini series. I tried to get into Rock
s grandson, but I just couldn't get into it. What I like about those comics is that they had a wide range from ridiculous stories to stories that made you think. In their own way they were kind of commentaries especially for Sgt. Rock. In my opinion I believe his stories were Anti-war but at times explained sometimes you need to fight. I do also think they are more interesting than Superhero comics.

If you want a good comic, have you ever hear about The Unknown Soldier? It is another story with a lot of anti war messages however he shoulders the burden to protect the innocent. His story starts when a soldier and his brother are fighting in the Philippines when a Japanese grenade blows up in their foxhole killing the brother and the Unknown soldier horrendous facial wounds. The OSS trains him and he becomes the greatest agent they ever had capable of disguising himself as anyone with a make up kit. He is such a thorn in the Germans side that Hitler personally issues a kill on sight order on him.

Oh yes I have heard of the Unknown Soldier truly is a classic, he seems very interesting to me, and like many of these guys...got a reboot that wasn't all that spectacular  www.comicvine.com/unknown-sold… I get why they want to update these characters for a modern audience but at the same time I just miss the WW2 setting for them. THere was somuch charm to them.

I think they want to cater to the adults who grew up with this and the new generations who are play modern warfare games. It is the same reason a lot of video games are going modern war settings. With DC and Marvel, war stories have always been on the back burner. Instead they choose the superhero route. Now they want to make superheroes darker and edger but this could have been done with the war hero comics. To use a common phrase, War is hell. I think they really need make one of these comics in the movies.

Exactly that's truly the point! However the problem is not DC itself but the consumer, like I showed you DC tried to bring these characters new life, but it's mainly the superhero genre that gets the most sales. Grant it there is nothing wrong with superheroes but I think that people should give genres a chance as well. In the early 1950s before the disater known as the comics code came out, there were Westerns, Love stories, crime, horror, war, funny animals all different kinds (Also I think one of the reasons why Japanese manga sells alot better in both it's home country and here as well) So I don't think it's because DC doesn't want to, it's just that it's not a demand. Personally I think they market outside their target demographic. Funny thing about that there was talk of a Sgt. Rock movie in the 1980s-90s with Arnold Scharzenegger playing him (Ironic I know) and in 2008 they were going to make one but shelved it because of the Sherlock Holmes movies, and there was a drastic change saying they were gonna set it Modern times. Again as much as  I think he works better in the WW2 era. Call it a stupid dream, but I want to make a Sgt. Rock Animated Series. I want to bring to Sarge and Easy Company's adventures to life through that and adapt many of his stories. Show the horrors of war while also showing that sometimes we need to fight a war. Showcase the problems at the time and how it still affects us today all that stuff. But like I said it's just a stupid dream.

Sorry it has taken me awhile to respond back, I went out of town for the weekend. I never heard anyone attempting to try to make a Sgt. Rock movie. But I have heard other Star Spangled War characters showing up in the latest Batman animated series with General JEB Stuart and the Unknown Soldier. It even had Control from the OSS comic. As for your dream, I support it. I will put money down man.

It's find, they did but it was more of a cameo than say actually appearance. Thank you my friend, I truly want to make it come true. Problem is that it's going finding an audience for it. I mean know there is an audience that will love it, but finding somone who is willing to show it is going to be hard. maybe it could be on Netflix or HBO or something like that.

You will have an audience. If Marvel Ant man can get people to watch, then people will watch the show. HBO to the best of my knowledge never showed animate shows or movies outside the family channel. Netflix might be a little bit easier, but you will need a quite a bit of pocket change. Plus you will need animators. Once you got that, you might need a lawyer to convince DC to let you make this show. The dream is not impossible, it is the exact opposite. Look at what roosterteeth did, they managed to create a successful anime franchise with out the big name studios.

No problem man. A great man once said, We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard. No dream is to small or to big if one is ready to face the burden of the task ahead. My self I want to become a accomplish fiction writer. I am sure these dreams will one day come to light.
