Description The completion of the first Argosy mission to Mars. The two mission spacecraft (in the foreground) have used their NERVA nuclear engines a final time to brake and insert themselves into low Earth orbit. Here the ships will be re-provisioned and refueled for the next Mars mission. The 12 astronauts of this mission will spend the next three months in isolation in the cylindrical Isolation lab, undergoing medical checks and ensuring they have not brought back any Martian microbes. The lab will be resupplied and crewed by Medical staff ferried up in space shuttles like that stationkeeping near-by.

so this is a reusable mars booster system basically?

Thomas-Peters In reply to LordOmegaZ [2015-06-01 22:01:39 +0000 UTC]

Not really a booster, a reusable Mars mission spacecraft. At this stage, the fuel tank is pretty much empty, to be refueled and readied for the next mission. The cylindrical PMM (Planetary Mission Module) is at the far end, housing orbital sensors and the crew. The lander was left in Mars orbit.

oh!

i thought it was those two boosters that decouple from the side of the saturn V mars ship

No, I'm not sure what those are, in the animation. Presumably strap-ons to assist the S1C first stage. These vehicles are lofted by a modified Saturn V, but are unfueled on ascent. They are fueled on orbit, where the PMM and other components are docked with them to form the Mars spacecraft. The engine is a nuclear thermal rocket. Two full mission spacecraft travel together on the mission,in case an emergency arises on one of them, each is capable of supporting the entire crew of the mission.

what's the shuttle look-a-like?

One of the original designs for the Orbiter, with internal tankage. It was boosted by a manned, fly-back 1st stage.

BEAUTY! Wow!!! Love the cloudscape below. And if only we'd gone with this more practical shuttle design, instead of the Flying Death Trap (tm). A delicious taste of the future that we ALMOST had....

Peebo is totally right. I have built pretty much identical structures in orbit above Kerbin...but...yeah...not so nice looking.

Three words:

Kerbal Space Program!

Though I am in no way good enough with the game to try and make anything that looks as wonderful as your images.....

But a person can dream, right?

Much cheers to you and yours.

I'm much to much of a novice with KSP. But if you do this in it, let me know!

Ha! I can't even reliably land craft on the Mun!

I have to drop rovers every where and wheel around so I don't crash.

I highly recommend watching "Scott Manley" for really neat and entertaining ways to play the Kerbal Space game.

Much cheers to you and yours.

Ah, the classic NAA shuttle, jet engines and all.Β  I remember seeing the concept art and the various wing planforms in the '71 World Book Science Year.

Yeah, I think that was one of the first places I saw it , too. I'm hoping to do an image of it in atmosphere with the jets on.

NASA and their contractors put many man-hours of work into making things integrated and interoperable. Lucky for us we can reap the benefits of their work.

Thank you, sir. I had some fun putting on graphics reminiscent of schemes Robert McCall painted in his early shuttle illustrations.
