Love the feet and hands and the hunched outline. It's got some Shirow-esque bowling-ball-eyes too ([link] ). Very nice.

Hah, Shirow is so semantically ingrained into my aesthetic vocabulary at this point, regarding mecha especially, that his stylistic motifs seep through whether I consciously intend them to or not! = p Thanks, Daniel, I'm glad you like it.

Yeah, it was the "melon" that really attracted me to his design in the first place! (What can I say, I'm a sucker for the melons I guess.) Kind of a cross between a porpoise and a Global Hawk, which has always struch me as somewhat cetacean-lookin' in its own right.

It does have an aircraft like quality to it. It's the fins, they remind me of an Anomalocarid.

People do a lot of really amazing stuff with Zoids, especially some of the more esoteric prehistoric critters! [link] for example has some nice specimens.

Looking good. I used to watch the show years back. I was a bit of a fan.

Aw yeah, more mechas. I love the froggish look this one has, like it could leap in and out of water like some sort of mechanical, ribbiting shock trooper.

Oh hellz yeah, that would be awesome! In fact Rob and I were talking about how Venus has a really high atmospheric pressure (92 terrestrial atms at the surface!), so that the "aquatic" styling of these mecha, like deep-sea diving suits, might not be too far off.

Why, Thomas? Why must you scrap these masterpieces? It is as if your pencils are filled with pure gold, and the pages are made from the hemp of heaven!
By the way, have you ever looked into a career as a concept artist? I think you'd do well.

Aw, thanks man, that's one of the kindest compliments I've ever gotten, I think! Bottom line is, I Scrap stuff like this because it's not finished to my satisfaction--too many smudges, scribbles, and tool marks, and no refined surface treatment. I'm also pretty picky about which drawings I *DO* finish--i.e. clean up and polish, shade or color, do postproduction in Photoshop. This one doesn't really make the cut, by my standards...Really I just wanted to explore some of the possibilities inherent in Rob's original design.
You know man, I'm not sure I'm cut out for professional concept design...I think you have to be really reliable, able to "produce on demand." My artistic assets (not sure the right word for that) are pretty fickle. I go through long "dry spells" where I can't draw at all.
But again, I really appreciate your esteem and confidence...Means a lot to me!

The way Rob described it to me, one of the legs is growing a gun!

Oh that's a very interesting way for the feet to be structured, but I imagine it would be sturdy. And you friend has awesome art as well!
