Well, although I have sent them (from the movie site) congratulations and thanks, let them know it was very well-done. Your gear looks awesome, too.

Hahah... Don't let the steel dissuade you so swiftly! I used to be deathly afraid of the stuff. It just takes a little time, and a lot of patience. My current tool selection if very minimal and couldn't have cost me upwards of $100. But even if you don't ever get into armor making, it's still fun to ogle at. Thanks for the compliments!

I got tendonitis from all the hammering...
But it seems like your a fellow armor enthusiast! Wicked work, I hope those aren't pop rivets.

yeah... millions of hammer strokes are great for the body. not. Proper form helps, but who has time to think of proper form when working on an exciting piece?
Thanks for the compliment! And the rivets you see are not of the pop variety. Thankfully I'm beyond that stage. Although, I did cheat and use some pop rivets to get the spikes that stretch across the eye slit fastened on just because I don't have access or knowledge regarding welding.

I made it out of 22gauge cold rolled steel, because it's part of a costume for Born of Hope (www.bornofhope.com). Very much costume grade work.
The patina, if by that you mean the finish on the metal, is just from me sticking the finished pieces in a bonfire a few times. Quite crude, but it's Orcish so what's to be expected?
What do you mean by formes? If you're talking about just the shapes of the metal, all it took was a lot of hammering! I had a stump to do all the dishing, and for a lot of the fluting I used a railroad spike that was flattened off on one end. I mostly just used a ball peen like hammer to do all the work, but sometimes I resorted to a sledge.

What did you make it out of? What is the patina from? How did you get all the lovely formes?

Spectacular work! It's some of my favorite armor from the movies.
I got started in armor-making with chainmaille and I'd like to move on to other forms. Any advice for getting started?
