Description How could a city look like in 500 years from now?

This one resulted from a commission that did not work out as expected. I didn't want to scrap the picture i did and wanted to use it for a personal project. I decided to create a panorama from it. Which wasn't an easy task since the original format was portrait, intended for a book.

Technically i took the vue base file and heavily extended it to the left. The Vue file had a few hundred mb in the end. I also did tons of testrenders for it. Even full size and full quality. So there are surely 40hrs work in the setup of the scene alone. 8hrs actual work and the rest render time. 8000px wide can take a while to finish.

Then, of course, i took it into Photoshop. It was never an intention to work photorealistic. So what i did was to get me textures and slam them across the picture. That's the fun part. the work part was it then to manipulate and adjust these textures to make them fit. Vue's multipass rendering also allowed me to add new elements to the pic. Even if i already was completely in the Photoshopping stage. Quite some elements on the left side of the pic got added rather late in the making process. Again a lot of work that i had to do because i wasn't entirely happy with certain parts. And there goes the time.

Absolutely stunning. I took this, as well as "Hadley's Hope" and "Ellenshaw Corridor", as partial inspiration for my description of an alien city (with credit and a linkback) in my Mass Effect-related fanfic, here: Simply gorgeous . I used this as partial inspiration for my description of an alien space station, and gave you credit and a linkback, in my Mass Effect-related fanfic, here: [link] .

Wonderfully beautiful. I love the way you made the sunrise (or is it a sunset?) give that impression of the buildings and so forth and the city within as well as the city-like life that seems to be teeming. I also find the transportation roads you drew very convincing. It's almost like you took a dream of mine and painted it into life.

i created me a 3d plate that already had a lot of detail in it. but a lot of extras were added with photoshop and painting and manipulation.

Faszinierend.

The detail is unbelievable- all the girders and windows and lights. Took me a couple looks to notice the ships, but I like that touch.

And to top it all off, those epic sun rays! Stuff like this is why I you!

PS: You work with EIGHT THOUSAND PIXELS?! I'm overwhelmed by 1024 from time to time...

tigaer In reply to DJ-Zephyr [2010-01-21 23:41:41 +0000 UTC]

glad you like it. thanks. well the 8000px size here is an exception. normally my minimum is 3000px wide... standard is 4000 - 5000px. and that mainly because i want all my work in a good print quality.

DJ-Zephyr In reply to tigaer [2010-01-21 23:49:55 +0000 UTC]

Still incredible numbers. Even with my second screen holding all the tools, I get overwhelmed when working on stuff bigger than my screen resolution (1024x768).

I suppose if I had a bigger art pad it'd be less daunting, but I can't afford to upgrade my antique Wacom yet.

well i'm working on a intuos3 a5 size... and my desktop (dual screen) is 2944px wide. tablet size isn't everything. like size in general. but i must admit that my machine is pretty much uptodate. big advantage.

4"x5" Wacom ArtPad II here, from the days of the serial port. It's actually a nice pad, and the pen is good too, but I wouldn't mind something bigger that I could use a real pencil with.

Die Szene hat eine schöne mystische Wirkung, aber in Deiner Zukunft gibt es ja gar kein Grün! Noch mehr Entfremdung, noch mehr Entfernung vom Ursprung. Das stimmt mich irgendwie traurig.
