As time passed Sarafina allowed herself to get closer to the mysterious lioness. There was so much to learn about her, and she made an effort to befriend the seemingly troubled lion. Her pregnancy was nearing its end, and Zira was not far behind. She had also kept her promise to hunt for Sarafina even though being pregnant herself. None of the other lionesses trusted Zira, Sarabi had even tried to convince her to stay away from the brawny lioness. But, Sarafina brushed off the concerns; she'd always been more naïve and trusting truly looking for the best in everyone. For the dry season the winds were unusually cold, Sarafina allowed herself to relish Zira's warmth for the moment. There had always been a curious question nagging at the back of Sarafina's mind, but she had wanted to wait for her to know the mysterious lioness better before asking. "... have you ever wanted a lion as your own mate?" Sarafina slipped into the conversation, a little less tactfully than she intended. Zira immediately let out a muffled laugh. "You mean do I wish I was Scar's queen?" Zira always had a way of cutting through a lion's façade, it was even easier since they were so close now. "No need to worry, I don't like your mate in the way you imply." Though her words were sharp they carried an air of amusement. Sarafina laughed, "I wouldn't have been offended, I was just wondering since you've always been so close." Zira smiled, "he saved my life when I was a cub, I owe everything to him for protecting me from my father. I love him as a dear member of my life, I'd be broken without him... but romantically I've never felt that way for any lion before." Sarafina rested her chin on the other lionesses head, as she let Zira enter a more vulnerable side of herself; something that was so rare for her. "I use to think love was broken for me because of the way my father treated my mother and I, but I don't think that anymore." "What changed to make you think different?" Sarafina pondered. Zira turned to her and smiled "I just realized I don't need some scrappy maned lion to complete myself, I guess I just don't like lions in that way, and that's okay with me it seems like it's always drama with them!" Sarafina laughed a sad laugh, a memory of her former mate, now dead flashed through her mind. She once thought he was what completed her, but now everything was for her daughter. "What's the deal with Scar, I heard you had a mate before him that you chose over him. He died didn't he?" Zira was never so good with emotional topics. "There is something..." Sarafina looked down to her friend before continuing. "You know how we both can't stand the hyena situation... and also the herds are moving on..." Zira huffed in reply, saying nothing. "I hoped that if I could become Scar's mate I might be able to convince him to make changes for the better, possibly even bring back Taka." Zira took a second before responding. "Maybe convincing him to rid the pridelands of a few hyenas for me would be pretty great." They both laughed.
