Description She carries me through days of apathy
She watches over me
She saved my life in a manner of speaking,
When she gave me back
The power to believe...

The closing statement a beautiful and moving piece written by King Crimson. Please take the time to listen to it: [link]

This fractal design is a re-working of: [link]

I would have simply submitted as a re-do, but I really didn't feel like it had the same light-vs-dark quality. Instead, I decided to name it after another musical favorite of mine. It took over 50 hours to render, but I think that the image quality justifies every second that I had to wait for it (even at fullview you still can't see all of the detail).

Shown as rendered in Apo 2.08.

Thanks! BTW: Did you check out the link to the song that I left in the comments? From your past submissions, I know how much you're into music and figured that you might appreciate it...

Yes I did, it's very powerful song and I'm instantly drawn to the lyrics at the end. Admittedly, I had never heard King Crimson music before.. there seems to be a similarity in style to pink Floyd. I like

It is an excellent choice to accompany such a stunning fractal work

Actually only about half their tunes are "Floydish". The other half are decidedly "un-Floydish" but still really interesting (well IMO anyway): [link] . As you're a fellow Peter Gabriel fan, you may recognize his bassist (Tony Levin) in the YouTube link above.

WOW, it is pretty amazing to contrast the 2. I never re-render, but there is a marked difference. I might want to try higher quality on some of my favorites.

Thanks for the comment and the Molly! In addition to rendering at higher density, I've also been experimenting with the new Xaos and invisibility features of Apo 2.08. So far it looks like they clean up tube and rotational fractals quite nicely...I'm thinking that I may try to re-work a few more of my old flames

Hmm, you'll have to let me know what sort of params you are playing with to clean up the tubes.

I am still puzzled on how to properly use xaos, and what will work well for my favorite styles.

What do you think was the quality difference between the 2? Or what quality did you render the latest one?

Sorry that it took so long to reply. I wanted to take a bit of time to answer your questions in some detail...

To clean up tube fractals (especially one's that contain JuliaN transformations), one really useful technique is to make the original tube transform invisible. The transformation still contributes it's information to the others and still influences the overall look of the flame, but is taken out of the picture itself along with any distracting lines that it may contribute (really great when a cool juliaN pattern is being hidden behind a cluster of massive tubes). [link] would have been a hopeless tangled disaster without this feature. I also made one of the transformations invisible in this flame (I'm not sure, but I think it was one of the two tube transforms in this piece).

I also applied some rather unorthodox Xaos weighting in this tube rotational, and it did seem to produce the smoother, more solid, appearance that I wanted. I'm still not sure if it will work consistently with other rotational designs - so I don't want to comment too much more on Xaos before trying my ideas out a few more times. In the meantime, the need for "rototube" test subjects to experiment on has prompted me to write a new rotational tube script...so this could be among my next submissions...

In terms of quality, the main thing that I've changed is pairing lower scale settings with higher zoom in the image settings dialog. I had read some interesting discussions either here or on the FracFan forum about this (and now I wish I had book-marked it 'cause I can't remember where it was). This produces higher density fractals, which translates into better quality images. I'm still using the same render quality settings as I always had (either 2000 or 4000 and oversampling of 2 or 3). The other noteworthy change was abandoning the batch render script in favor of the Apo render tool. The latter produces better images at the expense of longer rendering times. It seems that the bottom line here is: "If you want high quality renders , you're going to have to wait for them..."

I hope this gives you enough info to start with. If not, just drop me a note and I'd be happy to try to answer any other questions you might have.

Hmm I'll have to give the individual tube invisibility a try at some point

That is odd about the quality, I have heard that high zoom lengthened renders, but that was many versions of apo ago. I will give changing the zoom a shot and see how it goes.

You are using the same quality and oversampling that I try for. It might be interesting to see the difference between high quality and high zoom.
