Description Final solution for Fred Lynch's "The Sound and the Fury." The assignment was to make an illustration about a sound you hate, black and white, fixed size.
I was so excited to get this assignment. Years and years ago when I was just getting the idea of going to art school, I toured at the Montserrat College of Art (a very good school), and I was part of a tour that stopped by Fred Lynch's upperclass advanced illustration class, which was critiquing their versions of this very assignment. My mom and I sat down to listen and didn't get up for the rest of the extensive critique. I was enthralled. That critique, and Fred's teaching style, was one of the biggest reasons I decided to go to art school. So anyway I was pumped to try my hand at this.
The whole point of Fred's class is to illustrate things in a way that solves the problem,(substance,) but also so that you're creating a piece that you would be making anyway (style). The nature of the assignment led to a lot of really intense and some very unpleasant imagery, but I have found that that's not really what I enjoy doing, and I was determined to make something sort of charming that still got the idea of annoyance across.

Ink, and then black and white gouache on arches block watercolor paper.

Really cool piece. I actually went to tour Montserrat today and met Fred when he spoke to us about the illustration department. Seemed like a great guy, I'd love to have a class with him.

i really like the back light on his shoulders, it separates him from the background giving a good depth of field in the picture. i like soft light on his the face. his calm facial expression caught my attention. very powerful

The fact that you consider Montserrat a very good school pretty much reassures me that I made a good choice. I'm always doubting myself, haha. But I trust you as an artist, so this was nice to read.

'Excellent solution! So did you actually work in B&W? I know that for me it's easier to work in color and desaturate...

I came for the illustration, got hooked by the words. I love the illustration itself and it resonates because I see it so often (and I must be too thin skinned, though I never intervene, I'm no arbiter of taste), while I loved the way you described your passion and interest in being an artist.

God I hate when people don't care whether their speakers aren't sound proof and they just turn their music up full volume and you can actually hear the lyrics and beat and shit. They do that on the subway around here.

Holy somethin, your work is so sensitive I could die in ! As a watercolours amateur, I love that.
Maybe you'll be interested at learning that you reminds me the sensibility and colours of the french author Bastien Vivรจs (Which is strange to say here because this art is only black and white).

I love the feeling that you get from it. It's tranquil at first glance and then you notice the annoyance on the first man's face and then the "noise" emitting from the headphones. I really love the background too. Nice amount of detail.

Your method of communicating that sound is quite effective. I love your style. What you did here almost looks like charcoal. I also wanted to comment on the composition, which is a bit heavy in the right side, but works thanks to the figures in the background creating some good lines.

Very good work. I had Fred Lynch at Montserrat. He was one of the reasons I went to school there.

I hate it when people play their music extremely loud, especially in the middle of class when you're trying to concentrate on something. Especially when it's a genre of music you hate with a passion. X[

Very nice painting, btw. I really like the effect you added around his earphones to kinda give the viewer a sense of the source of annoyance. Awesome work.

The overall look of this picture is lovely. It really got the message of annoyance across without overdoing it. I really like the I guess texture of the picture, its slightly smoother the watercolor.

Thought bubble from the other guy (in my mind) "Turn down the music!" Possibly this interpretation comes from riding on many a bus with seat partner having the volume too high on their MP3 players.

Awesome piece. Definite fav
