Description *The urge to full-view is insurmountable... full-view...*

Many moons ago, ~anya1916 asked me if I would be interested in having an art trade, and I was all too happy to accept! But, with the 10,000-11,000 pageview party thing and a lag in the inspiration department, I was never able to actually get my half off the ground for some time. Fortunately, however, I've actually managed to upload it, and I had a marvelous time drawing and color it. This is an illustration of a story ~anya1916 wrote for her characters, Remy (the guy) and Sean (the girl), sitting on a bench and looking at the stars into wee hours of the night, a long-time ritual for the best friends. Sean, though, has secretly fallen in love with Remy, but because she knows he doesn't reciprocate, all she can do is keep it hidden. In the story, she'd rather watch him instead of looking at the stars.

No, the irony that you can't see any stars in this picture has not been lost on me. Maybe it's better that you can't, though, since Sean is not concentrating on the stars. It was difficult to color everything in a comprehensible but still interesting way; in ~anya1916 's story, she said the two would purposely stake out a bench that was away from a streetlamp or the city, so my only light source was the moon, and a full moon at that, or else Remy and Sean would have been more over swallowed by darkness. The bathing blue I ended up using is still contrasts a little too much with the light source than would be appropriate, but again, I had to make it interesting, too.

Critiques welcome! I have a new policy to stay open-minded about critiques, I just have a stipulation for you: PLEASE give me a suggestion on how to FIX the problem you see instead of just stating what you don't like about it. That way I learn from your comment. Otherwise, they're not helpful.

HOPE YOU LIKE IT ANYA! Thank you for your patience.

Awww, I love the scene and the story behind it, poor Sean!

I always love the descriptions you write, btw, like the whole thing about the irony of the stars not being in the picture. Your comments always seem to make your pictures more endearing combined with your already great art.

I'm actually really happy to hear that you enjoy the descriptions I write about my drawings! I try to be a little insightful on the process it took to make the picture and how I feel about it, because those are the most interesting things for me to read in the artist's description. I'm glad what I write is endearing!

great job!! your amazing ability to take on the most odd and beautiful angles of drawings and make them work perfectly to portray an emotion and scene will never fail to astound me.
The light source is perfect and I got what was going on RIGHT away before reading your description!

i love the angle, it's certainly different, and the mood of the piece wouldnt have been the same had it been in a more conventional view. i noticed that people have already pointed this out, but the path does seem a bit bright, especially compared to the grass. the contrast is very big, making it look as if the path were somehow on a higher level than the grass, as if it were a platform or a stage. does that make sense? im not very articulate, forgive me

the only suggestion i can think of is to either tone down the path, or the brighten up the grass, which would make it look "higher" and less "under" everything else. personally id tone down the path.

yeah. that's it! great work though! i dont think i can ever draw anything like this! anatomy and angles are totally my weak points, the 2 things that make this work really good!

And while everyone else showers love over this (I like it, no worry) I see a couple of things that make me wonder.
The first is the path, the stones on the path seem to glimmer too much in the moon/lamplight, and it does take a lot of focus off the characters themselves. It is also the most obviously data-manipulated part of the piece, which makes me a little squirped (I just made that up). The overall more comic-like feel of the picture contrasts with the softer sheen of the path. Personally, I don't mind the lineart being bold and clear, it makes me feel more at home (since I read a lot of internet comics).
The other thing I noticed is that the bench they're sitting on doesn't seem to be broad enough for Sean to lie like that. Unless she's supporting herself with one leg and half her body's off the edge. I do see that her right arm is hanging beside his leg, and that's ok. I'm just wondering about her tush.

Was that constructive enough? >_>

I love it so much I am in love with how the guy looks off out of the picture, and how the girl DOES seem to be looking at him, but only shily, definitely not trying to make it too obvious... they are so very beautiful together ^^

crits... right... hmm. I think that the colors are chosen perfectly to create a nightly atmosphere... I have problems with that myself. however, the black lines may at times provide too big of a contrast. did you ever try working with colored lineart? for this pic, the biggest place that would need some colored lines is the girl's hair, which is too light to be outlined in black, IMO. I think adding color to some parts of the lineart would overall give the pic a softer feel... *nods*

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Trounced In reply to Disney-bubbles [2006-12-03 05:12:29 +0000 UTC]

Oohhhhh I see it! You're right, the black is a little too dark-- any suggestions on what color you think it should be? I have worked with colored lineart, but (lol we had a small talk about lineart) I found a quicker way to blast through that step to do it with one color, so I've recently started cutting corners. Thanks for your suggestion; next deviation I'll try some more colored lines. I'm glad you like everything else, though! Thank you!

Disney-bubbles In reply to Trounced [2006-12-03 10:55:28 +0000 UTC]

the whole lineart? I'd probably colorize it brown, and then change the color balance on that layer to make it more blue but that's cause I really have problems selecting night-time colors. if you can eyeball it, just go for a brown that has more blue in it than day-time brown

if you wanna color lineart sections, like the hair, or the shirt, then just pick a darker color than the color of the section you're filling in

This is absolutely lovely, Deanna. Angles can be difficult to draw but you've pulled this one off nicely! I especially love Sean's expression, so full of compassion. The blue in the shading worked out rather well, I think. Hmm...critiques...I don't really have any. Except maybe adding a little line width variation but I can understand that can be difficult without a tablet. *had to use a mouse for forever*

But anywho I shall say again that this is lovely!

Haha The line variation is a good idea; I took a little shortcut with the lineart and I admit it came out thick. I'm glad you think everything else worked well! Thank you so much for your comment.

niahaahah i'm the first one to comment !! only 10 min ago you submitted it !!!! and i'm here to see it immediatly !!!
just as i saw 'les Γ©toiles' i couldn't believe it "yeah ? this is it ? i'm gonna see Deanna's part of art-trade with me ??!!!"
and...... my lil and all fragile heart just stopped beating for a few seconds, letting me completly speechless, breathless in front of that marvellous pic !!!!!
the angle is just awesomely managed !!!! and I so love that you choosed to show Sean's point of view ! we can read all her sadness and love at the same time on her face ! and we can see Sean's shoes on the ground ! she's got them off her feet !!! (awesome shoes by the way, for both of them)

for criticising the pic on itself : i really completly think the anatomy here is perfect in every point !
i remember when you asked me how I did to make such rocks on my PZ pic 'not strong enough yet' but the rocks here are incrdible ! YOU DID THEM SO GREATLY (you know, i'm out of adjectives right now lol i just feel like repeating myself .... i'm getting old )
the only small small small (small ?) thing that could have been better is the grass, well the border of grass against the alley. Maybe making the grass coming a bit over the alley... do you get the idea ? because else, that grass looks perfect too !!! ( there're not enough love emoticons here to translates my feelings ! lol)...

Well i think i'll stop here because if i don't do it now, i'll never do !
oh yes, btw : THANK YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOU !!!!!

LOL I'm also glad you noticed Sean's shoes were off-- I didn't say anything about them in the description, but I remembered that was important to Remy and I wanted to include that detail!
Oh, yes, and I understand what you mean with the grass and I think you're right! I'll try to add some grass to it and see if I can pull it off. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
