Congratulation. This is very good work, I am especially impressed by the accuracy of the odoshi (a very rare occurrence) and I like the lacquered finish. I unfortunately thought of it after having started lacing mine up. Β

What did you use for the lacquer?

Historical? as in old? because in that case I would ad some nicks and tiny dents, as if it was a little damaged over time

I love it! I know this is historically acurate but...... How does that protect anybody, it's leather!!!

Sorry about getting into rant mode, but I can't help it. Hardened leather would hold up reasonably well to the weapons the were usually brought into play. The curved blade on most Japanese swords were made for a slicing, cutting motion. The leather is usually enough to resist slashing blows to a degree, and in the case of naginata, yari, or arrows, it's still better than nothing.
Also, this rocks! I love it.

1/8 inch thick, hardened leather is actually pretty good protection.
Also armor was mostly effective against glancing blows, not direct hits.
And I donβt plan on testing it, but this armor should be able to hold up to quite a bit against a real sword.

OH! I would have figured that leather is really easy to penetrate with a blade, but your the expert! Good work, how much time did you put into this??

Iβm not even sure how much time I put into it.
Iβve been working on it from mid December and it's still not completely done, probably 5 or 6 hours for making patterns. About 3 or so for cutting everything out. A few weeks worth of lunch-breaks at work to dye and lacquer it all. And to put it together... 3 seasons of Xfiles, 1 season of DBZ, and a few random movies give or take. (That's punching all the holes, lacing it all, and making the chainmaile while watching DVDs)
That's approximate times, but it's a lot.
