In 1963, Southern Rhodesia secessed from the Federation of Rhodesia, a semi-independent state, and declared itself the Republic of Rhodesia. Fearing rule by the native African majority, the ruling white minority declared the independence of the Republic of Rhodesia. The result was the Rhodesian Bush War between the white government and the African majority fighting for control of the nation. The Republic of Rhodesia was supported by South Africa throughout the war until 1978, and in 1980 Rhodesia accepted majority rule. The country was renamed Zimbabwe and a series of agreements were made between the minority and majority, such as the flag, and the moving of the capital to Gweru in the center of the nation. In 1965, the Federation of Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland followed Southern Rhodesia and secessed. In 1967, the Zairean-Northern Rhodesian War broke out over the Katanga Province of Zaire and the Luapula Province of Northern Rhodesia. The war ended after a year with little gained by either side. The United Nations and the African Union stepped in to negotiate peace. Northern Rhodesia lost the Luapula Province in the war, and due to the heavy losses encountered, the white government was forced to step down. In 1968, the nation became the Federation of Zambia-Malawi. In 1975, Mozambique and Angola gained independence and formed communist governments. In 1964, South Africa annexed South-West Africa.
