Description Yolyamanitzin, or Yoly for short.

A local friend I've made recently and I have begun collaborating with each other. One of the first things we're doing is developing a new genre of art: a mash up of Mesoamerican (particularly Aztec) and Steampunk principles to create a hybrid style that as far as I can tell has not really been done before. I'm actually kind of disappointed Mesoamerican architecture, culture, and history has not really become a part of pop culture outside of ancient alien theories and a My Little Pony character, there's such a wealth of material for deep and immerse fantasy mythologies there.

How did you do all of those textures?

This looks promising. I welcome new genres, we sure as hell could use some. A shame my experience of Mesoamerican culture in video games consists of Mayahem Temple and like a couple Donkey Kong Country levels.

Good on you, mate. When it seems everything in fiction is done to death, make a new genre. Hopefully it'll become the next big thing.

Though Zecora the zebraΒ is actually a reference to African culture, not Mesoamerican.

I refer to Ahuizotl: mlp.wikia.com/wiki/Ahuizotl

Not Zecora.

The fact that you actually took the time to learn about an MLP character that even weΒ bronies tend to forget about causes me no end of amusement.

On another note, something has been bothering me for a while.

Just how the heck do you pronounce Druthulidi?!?

It's funny because I'm not a brony and know next to nothing about the show.

Duthulidi is pronounced Druh-thoo-lee-die

Ah, okay. Noted for future reference.

Also, the show's not bad. Yeah, it's mostly the cutesy stuff you'd expect from a kid's show, but they got a few characters, particularly the villains, hardcore enough that you'd like them. King Sombra is essentially pony Sauron and Discord is Q, same voice actor and everything.

There's a Mayan MLP char? I never knew that, I'm not a brony so I wouldn't know.

I think he's referring to Zecora, a zebra who comes from the MLP equivalent of Africa.

I agree with you about the Mesoamerican culture. And you may have something with this Aztec/Steampunk hybrid It looks really good and fresh.

I hope the art genre takes off after I do some more with it.

I have this early morning pre-coffee notion that mesoamerican cultures were too rich and deep and interesting to explore bcause it would make the people workin on those story ideas jealous

Or something.

Anyway there is nothing wrong with that because that's what people like you are for

Nice work but i think they get some attenion in fantasy genre.
For example Ikana was (in my opinion) a mesoamerican/babylonian mix up.
Also in warhammer fantasy battles and warcraft are mesoamerican cultures.
But I dont know any fantasy movie/game/book (what ever) where a mesoamerica culture plays the mayor role.
It`s sad because they have a interesting culture.

UndyingNephalim In reply to Kaladia [2013-12-09 20:44:13 +0000 UTC]

I never really got a Mesoamerican vibe from Ikana, it seems a lot of people simply compared their name to "Inca" and that kind of stuck ever since. Ikana to me more so resembles Sumerian and ancient Mesopotamian culture.

I recall Aztec inspired lizardfolk from Warhammer, though I don't quite remember a culture like that in Warcraft.

The trolls of warcraft like the Zandalari and the Gurubashi are pretty much Aztec and Maya inspired.
The other Trolls are a combination of Aztec and for example germanic.

The trolls in Warcraft were a weird mashing of all kinds of "savage" cultures. The forest trolls, particularly the Amani, had a kind of mesoamerican feel to them with a hint of voodoo.Β

I agree with you in the fact that mesoamerican culture has quite a lot to give to fictional ambientation.
