Description Well, due to the latest manga story-line, I simply had to move this one to the top of my to-do list. I've been wanting to draw Kikyou for some time, but she just kept getting moved down the list in favor of other things. No more. My first attempt at Kikyou - drawn in TOTD style. Her character doesn't play quite as big of a part in TOTD as she does in Takahashi's original series, but she's still important. And, even before I had the idea for "Temple of the Dog", I always thought Kikyou looked quite Egyptian. Heck, some of the best cosplayers of her use what is sold as a Cleopatra wig!

Anyway, sketched by me (with about five versions in the garbage can before I got one I liked enough). References used, of course - screencaps of Kikyou and I got the idea for her headband from a book on Egypt I have on loan from the library. I was going to make her collar thing more elaborate, but was pressed for time with this one, wanting to get it posted today since chapter 465 will be out...

Inked with a Sakura inking pen and scanned into the computer, where I colored it using Photoshop 4.0 and a mouse on my Mac OS9.1. The background image is actually a screencap taken from a virtual Egyptian temple "tour" I found on-line a while back.

"Temple of the Dog" (TOTD for short) is an Inuyasha Alternate Universe (AU) fanfic I'm writing. In it, Inuyasha is a living deity in ancient Egypt - he was sealed to a pillar in his temple 50 years before by his temple's first priestess, Kikyou. He's released by Kagome, who becomes the new priestess of the temple (and his romantic interest). Since I've always loved anything Egypt, and of course, am obsessed with Inuyasha, it seemed only appropriate to combine them for my story. You can find links to the story and a lot of fanart for it over at ~ToTD

nice drawing of kikyou, you captured her really well
the manga Inu-Yasha gives me kind of nostalgic feelings, its been so long I've read some parts of it
I liked the simple yet amazing drawing style of the mangaka, also that she has putted so much from the japanese mythology and demons into it

Thanks so much! I agree with you about Takahashi's art style. Her art is very basic, without a large amount of detail, and yet she manages to portray so much emotion with it. The manga ended last summer, and they're finally finishing off the anime (if you haven't seen it, check my main page for the links and more information).

The last 11 volumes of the manga are available on my website - adinuyasha.com . The new anime is available on-line for free from Viz (links are on my main page), but unfortunately only viewable by people in the US. If you can't see it at those links, let me know and I can give you a couple of proxy servers you can try.

Thanks! Yeah, when we were looking for a wig for our Kikyou cosplayer (back in 2002), we bought what they called a Cleopatra wig - her hair is long and straight and with blunt-cut bangs.

Hmm...Kikyo really looks like cleopatra and she is in many ways like one. Shes as beautiful as them and after coming back to live she has been cold, but still in deep love with inuyasha... kikyo really is amazing person...

While I'm a die-hard Inu/Kag fan, I still adore Kikyou and feel that the anime didn't do her character justice. Her character is so much better in the manga.

Zuru-Kiri In reply to Urd-chan [2010-01-10 07:30:15 +0000 UTC]

Thats true... I really like kikyo to. One time in the anime she had a knife! I don't think that is even possible. Why they have to turn kikyo in some kind of monster? She was just lonely...not like some murderer. I'm inu/kag fan to, but kikyo still loves inuyasha forever and inuyasha cares about kikyo. She isn't terrible person at all. She's survivor!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Urd-chan In reply to Zuru-Kiri [2010-01-10 07:34:11 +0000 UTC]

They added the knife to that scene in the anime - it wasn't in the manga. Unfortunately, Kikyou got the short end of the stick part of the time (with Kagome getting the other end). I'm happy things were resolved as they were, but am extremely disappointed that the new anime cut out one of my favorite Inu/Kag scenes, too. There will only be 26 episodes, with 14 already aired, so I knew they'd have to cut things down a bit, but it seems they are skipping some really important moments in their rush. Have you watched any of the new series yet?

When i started to watch inuyasha i really hoped that there will be those lovely inu/kag scenes and many things that were in the manga. I really hated that knife scene! It was much better without it in manga!!! kikyo doesn't even have any knife... If someone makes series they should be sure they have time for it! And money to...
I haven't watched new series yet, but i will really soon start! I just have to wait better time for it, cause i want to watch it when i have time for it and now one comes to interrupt me

Urd-chan In reply to Zuru-Kiri [2010-01-10 16:24:37 +0000 UTC]

One thing I've brought up at my Inuyasha panels pretty regularly is the fact that the anime toned down the Inu/Kag moments from the manga, although they sometimes added it back in fillers (like episodes 89 and 90). Kikyou is a much more sympathetic character in the manga - the anime turned her into a bitch. The real shame is that the new series isn't focusing on the relationships at all.

Zuru-Kiri In reply to Urd-chan [2010-01-11 16:18:02 +0000 UTC]

Anime did make this series just some kind of battle story. Inuyasha+Kagome moments are funny and so sweet... After this last season inuyasha will end, and then its late to think about inuyasha/kagome, miroku/sango and all others... First season was so lovely and there was romantic stuff and all. I hope that in the end they will make some amazing scenes if not earlier! I really hope that will happen!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Urd-chan In reply to Zuru-Kiri [2010-01-11 16:27:27 +0000 UTC]

I'm hoping they at least do justice to Inuyasha and Kagome's reunion in the last chapter of the manga. Depending on how they do that scene, they can almost make up for what was left out earlier.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zuru-Kiri In reply to Urd-chan [2010-01-11 18:06:06 +0000 UTC]

I hope that to, although i haven't read it yet. I know its going to be good in manga, and same as you, i hope they will make it good in anime to! But still i will miss couple pieces of those lovely scenes if they wont make them. And i know already they wont, so i just hope the ending to be amazing and memorable!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Urd-chan In reply to Zuru-Kiri [2010-01-11 19:07:00 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, they've already skipped one big Inu/Kag scene in the new anime, but then again, since they are creatively re-arranging some of the story-lines, it could still be included. I'm doubting it, but it's possible.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Zuru-Kiri In reply to Urd-chan [2010-01-12 15:38:20 +0000 UTC]

If its possible, i hope they will! I like to see every one of those big scenes i have read about! I don't want to lose even one of them in anime! But if they wont do them, i just have to be satisfied with that ending. If they make it good at all... But i believe in them! I believe they will make good anime, just like the first season was

One of my favorite entries to the TOTD t-shirt design entry a couple of years ago had Inuyasha and Kagome standing behind a banner that read "Temple of the Dog", only Buyo was reaching over the banner and had crossed out the word "dog" and written "cat" instead.

Wow! This is beautiful! Personally, I am disgusted with the way the manga has made Kikyou out to be the heroine/central character, -- even after she's DEAD, ... AGAIN. Suddenly, all Kagome is is a vessel for Kikyou's power, and Kikyou's power is being credited for everything. I always felt a certain sympathy for her plight until this recent arc thrust her center stage again.(Sorry for the rant.) That said, I LOVE this picture!! You've captured her perfectly. The tragic moodiness, the loneliness -- it's all there. And I completely agree with you -- the Egyptian theme really suits her. Awesome job!

Urd-chan In reply to madmiko [2007-08-06 22:17:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know. And, as I really relate to Kagome, I can feel how she does - always feeling like she's in the Kikyou's shadow. I was just very glad to find that Kikyou wasn't the one who sealed Kagome's power. That would have made me dislike the character.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

madmiko In reply to Urd-chan [2007-08-07 00:02:43 +0000 UTC]

I agree. That would have been TOO much. Though, I already think it's too much, because "Kikyou's power" is getting the credit for everything -- Kohaku's shard being able to fight off Naraku's taint, even after she's gone -- how is THAT possible? -- the power in Kagome's bow -- how the heck did KIKYOU get in that? I'm sorry, but the character is finally, (thankfully!), GONE, and she still gets more print and credit than Kagome does. I really think Takahashi-san fell in love with the character in the latter parts of the manga, and has put her in the position of central heroine. Heck, all of her power, etc. should be IN Kagome now, and we all know that Kagome should be more powerful to begin with just due to the greater age and experience of her soul -- the part that IS completely KAGOME is more pure than Kikyou ever was. Kikyou wanted to shirk her duties as a priestess and wanted Inuyasha to be human. Kagome has always gone above and beyond anything she might be "obligated" to do in terms of the jewel, and she's completely accepting of everyone. I just want to see HER get the credit for the power she wields. She's not Kikyou, and it's NOT Kikyou's power she uses -- it's HERS. The size of her soul alone proves she is more than Kikyou ever was. (WHEW! That rant felt good!! LOL!!)

Didn't mean to go on and on like that, -- what I really wanted to do was say "THANKS!!!" for the scanslations. I truly appreciate you and doggieearlover going to that trouble to put that up for those of us who can't bear to wait for the English versions to come out!!! You're a true doll! And I love seeing all of the fanart generated for your story "TOTD." It's an inspired, and obviously inspiring piece of work. I've really just read a small part of it so far, and am looking forward to really getting into it when I finish the current story I'm writing. You ran some contests for fanart for it, right? If you get a moment, I'd love to hear how you did that.

In the meantime, keep up the great work yourself, both writing AND drawing. I always love to see YOUR pieces for "TOTD" since YOU know exactly how you'd like to see the characters. This one of Kikyou is a perfect example. I appreciate you sharing your vision!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Urd-chan In reply to madmiko [2007-08-07 22:58:08 +0000 UTC]

Well, but we found that the power in the bow isn't Kikyou's. The light in the Shikon no Tama may be part of Kikyou, but I'm wondering if isn't actually Midoriko, since Kikyou had gone to the cave where her remains are and "borrowed" that part of her soul that remained. When Kikyou died in the end, where did that part of Midoriko's soul go, after all?

And, it's nice to know that Kagome's powers will surpass Kikyou's in the end. Even Takahashi stated in the IY Profiles book that Kagome's powers are stronger than Kikyou's, but that she just hasn't come into them yet.

I can't wait to see what happens when Kagome gets the full use of her true spiritual power.

By the way, did you see the long preview for this week's chapter? Wow. Never thought I would see this happen, and then we have a two-week wait until the next chapter!
