Description (You can see the full-sized working file at [link] )

There is a couple scenes I avoid drawing from my Mewthree, Mewblade's work mostly since I cannot explain them, or easily visualize them. One of them includes the final phase of her marathon resurrection process, "Soul To the Living". The idea was for this little miracle to be a general visual representation of when we die: It's black. We start seeing 'the light'. Then we might see representations of the 'afterlife'. In Mewblade's world, she does the full metaphysical transition, briefly getting a tour of the various unknowns of the dead astral planes prior to waking up from the trance that starts the whole thing.

I picture this normally differently, more within the vicinity of Mewblade herself rather than some sort of panned out, panorama view. Rather than depict what it looks like to her (more like the Hell scenes from the movie "Constantine" ), I ended up going with what I figured was the picture that would require the least amount of explaining about what is going on, so hence "the valley", or basically, viewing the improbable. Everything shuffles about between one plane to another until Mewblade exits, more like a waver than a slideshow as I did here. Souls would look like actual souls in this phase, not figures. It allows her to experience death temporarily, and for her, it's more like an education tool. At one point she essentially stumbled during this process and was trapped for a while which is the time between book 1 "Death, Decisions and Destiny" and book 2 "Family Matters".

The floor includes the Norse "Valhalla", the Wiccan "Summerland", Christian "Hell" and Christian "Heaven", with the rest basically dubbed "Sand Ocean", which is another form of abysmal suffering that comes from Arabia (your punishment includes wandering the endless desert for all eternity). Sky is just really at random since I'm not exactly the most creative with skies at times. Otherwise, insanely large amounts of detail with the souls being the only major Photoshop anything effect, where everything else was painted from scratch, using next to no layers (the entire sky and main floor was only ever painted on one layer). Mostly wanted to prove to myself that I could actually make something sort of surreal and also really high detailed without being my usual cheating self about it. I need to be challenged and I need to be reminded that I'm not some one trick pony, since after all these commissions and fast pieces, I've been pretty convinced I couldn't do this. It's a very strange image, but it makes me happy.

Thank you, but I could have done it way better and made it a more personal experience than this happened to be.

At first the different sections were the nine circles of hell. probably the effects reading Dante's inferno for our literature class.

Anyhow, the piece looks great, I like how you rendered the spirits. Although the transition f the different floors looks a bit odd.

Definitely no clover fields in any of the nine circles.
I'm going to be reamed about the checkered floor for quite some time it seems. If I ever do this again, it's never going to be at that angle for sure.

I like that you combined the religions visions of heaven and hell in the image, can imagin that thinking of portraying this alone took forever. Really not an easy theme to illustrate. The endresult tells the viewer exactly what you wanted. Mewblade on a white road leading the lost souls back to the world. The parts of the different afterlifes appear too small, since I imagin them as endless. Guess I would have stretched them till the end of the image. Overall nice outcome!

There was a really odd perspective I was getting when trying to do a stretch out, so I left them checkered, as it were. Endless would have been more appropriate visually, for sure.

The spirits took me quite a while to figure out what I was doing when it came to effects. Couldn't settle on something, and liked the background too much to make them anymore opaque.

I love the idea of this and graphically it's wonderful. The only critique I have is I would have stretched the patches of various afterlifes out to the edge where the mountains start or close to, as opposed to having squares of them on the ground. This would have balanced the image a bit more but each to their own.
