Description I wanted to finally pick up my unicorn series again, but something went wrong in the sketching phase: I kept going and going till it would have been a waste of time to do an outline, coloring and cell shading. So this is what came out instead ^_^

Not much to tell actually, I'm not even sure myself if I like it or not, because I do and I don't. I don't know what the background is, it more or less created itself.

Bit of fun trivia: I was as good as done when I realized I had forgotten to add ears, lol, which of course immediately made me think of DD. I think I'm stuck associating her with forgotten body parts now

Oooooo this is beautiful! The shading and the unicorn is gorgeous, as well as the softness of the picture altogether. It makes me want to read the Firebringer Trilogy again *nostalgia*

I've heard of it, but never read it, does it have a unicorn of this color in it? That would be cool ^_^

And thanks! ^_^

There are worse things to be associated with, I suppose.

A quick comment on anatomy, since I'm running late and that seems to be the part that sticks out the most. It looks to me as though you have essentially a horse/deer topline, but the chest, ribs, and such that make the bottom-line strongly resemble a cheetah. I don't know if that was intentional or not. I suspect this unicorn would have a rather peculiar stride due to that, though, because the two species/families generally have a different style of movement.

VGiselleH In reply to wemustnotforget [2010-10-29 14:09:41 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's intentional, well, not a cheetah specifically, but that shape, yes. And I'll bet it has a different stride! Also, it's hind legs stand closer together than the front legs, which has to do something to the way it balances itself. Maybe it would be interesting to see what happens if I add a cheetah back to that chest. Thanks for identifying an animal for me to look at, dd!

I like the coloration and texture of its skin here, more realistic than your usual style!
I'm not skilled enough with horse anatomy to give advanced critique, but possibly I imagine that the back legs/hind section (whatever the "hips" and "thighs" are called on a horse) ought to be larger in order for the animal to be proportional?

Thanks, I'm trying to figure out what kind of texture I want on my unicorns, so used a horse coat for this one, lol. The anatomy however isn't "horse" so no need to know it, it just needs to look proportional by itself ^_~

The hind section is supposed to be (a lot) smaller/thinner than the front, but I am seeing something off about the hind legs' size as well, I'm just having trouble figuring out where I went wrong though. Possibly length and thickness? Maybe indeed fatten up those thighs without increasing the size...hmm, worth a shot, I'll try that later today Thanks for the comment ^_^

I watched a youtube playthrough of the PS2 video game "Shadow of the Colossus" today (have never and will never own a console so might as well watch it for the really moody story). The hero in that game is riding a horse, and man, that is one HUGE animal he's got there: [link] ! Having recently seen your image I paid attention to horse anatomy and you are right, your unicornds are really a very different breed.

That's a he?? I thought I was looking at a little girl on a normal horse! Wow, lol, big horse then, yes

But yes, it's not supposed to look like a horse, in fact my unicorns stopped looking like horses in my early teens, but there were/are still enough similarities for people to glance over this it seems. Hey, even I still refer to them as equines ^_~

Anyway, I changed this ones hindquarters a bit to hopefully bring a little more balance. It'll probably be the last change because I think I've gone blind to this image for now, lol.

Not sure about the change to his hind quarters, the hip looks better, but now the hind legs looks a bit ... fat instead. But it's hard to put a finger to it, maybe I'm just being too picky. It remains a cool image though.

I think the main issue here is anomanty (or however its spelled) once that gets improved it would be tons better ^^

Thanks for the comment, but could you be more specific on what you see is off on the anatomy? As I don't base it on any real life animal its a little hard to follow if you don't point it out ^_^ (Pointing fingers is allowed! )

dolphinsong In reply to VGiselleH [2010-10-25 19:40:41 +0000 UTC]

Its mostly the hind area. It smaller looking than the front end. The amount of muscle in the theigh area is not enough, needing to be larger looking It would be a good suggestion to look at horse anatomy.

No, I'm trying to go away from horse anatomy actually, though I suppose in this case a deer could work as well. I'll grab some of my references and work on it's bootie, thanks ^_~
