Description One of the character artworks I'm working on; this is for the notorious Dante Dane. His outfit for the first arc is very different from the "main" outfit of the previous incarnation of the series, though the mancleavage of his still remains.

...I'm going to hate myself for drawing all those chains; I know it.

oh dante and his sexy poses. since I can't write an official critique because I'm apparently a dA moocher, here you go

I really only have two critiques.
1. the angle of the blade almost makes it look like he's trying to saw off his shoulder. I'd think that with the angle of his hand, the hilt would have a more straight-on view so it looks like he's holding the knife/sword/thingy more parallel to the ground.

2. there's just something off about that left hand. It matches the arm length and all but it just doesn't feel like it wraps around his hip. Perhaps it's because the left arm looks a bit skinnier than the right one?

now for the positive stuff.
other than the two aforementioned things, I'd say he's got a very sexy pose with that sort of "come I'm gonna kick your ass" kinda look. The body looks proportional and the angle seems to match up with his stance so he doesn't look off balance.

1. I see what you mean about the angle of the blade, though for some reason I didn't correct it as per your suggestion. I can just whip out my lightbox and fix that, for sure.

2. I've been having the hardest time with that hand...! I am going to take some photo references so I can figure this out once and for all.

don't you know it. and even though they deny me critiquing, that doesn't stop me from comment-critiquing (i.e. cheating )

hands suck. they are the bane of my existence omg. [link] sometimes helps but that's better for full body.

his face almost looks too calm and collected to me...maybe it's because he has a knife and is in his 'happy place'? XD May want to beef up his arms a tad, but I like the rest!

You know, a few people have noticed that Dante isn't looking quite like he used to in the face. I can actually explain it; I've actually been omitting the additional lines on his face in the draft stages and add it when I colour it. I'll be sure to put some more meat on those arms of his! I think it's good to push yourself to draw irritatingly tedious details, though! I think it'll end up looking really good because of it.

You're right; those tedious details serve as visual bragging rights when you're able to make it work! And honestly, looking at it now, I don't think chains are *that* bad. Just so repetitive!

As for the poses, I do tend to use references for key parts so I can get a better understanding of it (and as I'm about to reembark in the world of comics, it's handy for me to learn them now so I can just do it from memory later!)!
